Soulfire Grand Master and Monastery Mentor

Price speculation for Soulfire Grand Master and Monastery Mentor? have they about bottomed out? They have steadily declined in value since release, but never really experienced the dramatic price drops many hyped cards see after a few weeks in standard. They aren't really seeing any standard play but I've heard monastery mentor is used in some legacy decks. I ask because I want to build a boros standard burn deck around them that could transition to modern post-rotation (whether or not this would fair well is another story) but I personally don't want to invest $170 in a deck if over half the value is tied up in these 2 cards and their value tanks after rotation.

my guess is they will increase. both are mythics with tremendous potential upside. we need to wait and see what BFZ block brings us, but I think it would be safe to pick up both right now. they wont be dropping much lower I don't think

I think that mentor has nowhere to go but up. He is so strong, and his potential is just beginning to surface. The mentor, on the other hand, is probably going to be bulk in a while. He's just not that strong.

My guess is that WicKid52 meant Soulfire for the first statement.

Mentor is played in vintage and legacy because of all the cheap 1 mana spells and I think I've heard of a vintage loop/combo that is nuts with mentor. I don't think he'll see any standard play and he has been tested and ruled out of modern, I think his price is stable.

Soulfire could certainly go up post rotation. Jeskai survives rotation pretty easily and so does Mardu, these two decks are the ones playing Soulfire so if one (or even both) become tier 1 I would expect Soulfire to go up in price but not too much.. between 4 and 10$ at most, 10 being quite crazy.

That being said, Post Rotation speculations are pretty impossible to nail and Jeskai/Mardu could also fall into abyss and Soulfire would go down...

My opinion is pretty simple. Monastery mentor foils; totally worth buying/trading for right now regardless of desire to play them, they'll be worth a lot more in a few years. Other stuff; only if you want it for a deck right now.

I dont see them being relevant in the upcoming standard post rotation.

If going wide is faster and more consistent than ramping into Eldrazi, then Mentor will hit $25-30 dollars. If ramping into eldrazi is quicker and more effective than going wide, then it won't. Keep in mind that the Eldrazi aren't going to have Annihilator. They may have something similar, but if they don't, they won't have any way to break through the player going wide.

kyuuri117 thats one hell of a bold speculation! I mean, no nuance or moderation in your statement really? Do you work for WotC? :P

Haha nah, i'm glad I don't work for WotC R+D, if I did I wouldn't be able to play!

But I think it's common sense. Either Mentor is going to be great because it's faster than Eldrazi, or it's going to be slower and thus obsolete.

Yeha I mean kyuuri has the right point I just feel like there will be less effective builds for mentor in standard and itll be pretty slow but thats only if they make good eldrazi that cost a million mana not these dinky 2 mana ones lol

Isn't that 5/8 that exiles four cards and allows you to play lands in exile only six mana? That's really damn reasonable for a 5/8, let alone a colorless creature.

Sure it doesn't do anything remarkable when it attacks, but that's not a body to scoff at, at least in this standard meta.

It depends on if they make efficient removal currently yes thats a good body and will do preetty well against most decks but if there are good flying creatures its pretty weak and if it dies to something like Doom Blade than itll be pretty bad.

Mentor has been going up the last few weeks, and foils have also gone up a good chunk, so i dont think its near its bottomed out. its a 4 of in vintage, and played 2-4 of in legacy, ive also seen some modern decks starting to test it out as well in jeskai decks such as uwr geist and delver

EssTea is right: I was talking about Soulfire Grand Master first. It's just not good. There isn't support for it, and it is the DEFINITION of win-more. If you have the mana to play a normally dead card in a burn deck or activate the ability while playing spells, you're probably winning.
