Sphinx's Revelation To Go Down?

With the spoiled card Spirit of the Labyrinth , I've heard rumors that Sphinx's Revelation may be dropping in price (isn't it easy to remove it?). What do you guys think (I hope not because I just bought some)?

Doubt it. The card will be played, but I'm inclined to think Esper will remain a driving force with rev as the backbone.

The only thing that will hurt SR is a significant change to the metagame. A single card won't change the meta, but it is possible that some combination of cards could prove inefficient for SR decks to handle. That being said, SR is (probably) too strong of a card to suddenly leave Standard because a single hoser was printed, especially if that hoser is a flimsy creature.

Dies to Doomblade. Just saying.

It dies to Spark Jolt . Not that Esper or Azorius run Spark Jolt , but still, Relevation's too important and valuable to those decks to go anywhere.

Or think about it this way, we've had Notion Thief and Frontline Medic lurking around for quite some time and it hasn't negatively effected the price of Sphinx's Revelation .

January 21, 2014 1:15 a.m.

A good part of that could simply be that the metagame isn't in a position to run those cards. I'm actually a bit surprised that nobody running Esper control has tried to sneak a Notion Thief into their sideboard to combat the mirror.

Hell, I saw Notion Thief played against Griselbrand this weekend at the Legacy open. When Sneak Attack resolved and revealed those two creatures, pretty much everyone in the room collectively shat their pants in amazement. He's one of the best sideboard cards every printed against decks that draw unfair numbers of cards.

This new card is definitely interesting and will probably have a small part in certain eternal formats, but Standard likely won't care about it a whole lot. Esper and Azorius control will just kill it, then Sphinx-Rev anyways. If this comes down before Verdict, it dies to Verdict without affecting the other player at all (aside from being a 3/1 for 2, which is decent but not amazing). If it comes down after Verdict, it's probably either alone or facing some stiff removal spells (or just another Verdict).

I probably wouldn't even side-board this card, even in a White Weenie or aggro deck. It just won't affect the board or your opponent when it really matters most.

MBD likes to draw its fair share of cards, but it also plays 498475 removal spells (and, with Bile Blight coming out, it won't stand a chance).

January 21, 2014 3:28 a.m.

@zandl bullshit bile blight ruins mono red and R/W devotion and mono blue as these decks key creatures will be killed turn 2 and 3 by a BB uncommon removal. Its B.S MBD is going to only worry about black mirrors and be even more dominant. I am honestly not going to spend a dime on BOTGs. I can't afford to go black and i'm going to end up running 20 different creatures to dodge bile blight. I hate where this format is going.

You're just mad because midrange is coming back and aggro is out of fashion. Dont cry. Sorry, not sorry.

@ ColdHeartedSith] shhhh it's okay, Just come play Control, then you can make others angry.

@ zandl I'm a little skeptical. If this thing had flash I'd say it would have a bigger role, but what's going to stop it from being Lightning Bolt ed to oblivion, or hell, Electrolyze ? I think this is a decent standard card, but perhaps a little overhyped. SR has nothing to worry about.

When has a single card completely stop a deck archtype? They'll still be played, and they'll do well. Also, I think Death and Taxes, and other similar decks will use this card.

SR dropped in price significantly already. Pre-Theros, SCG listed it for $40. Now it's $25. Being an enchantment and a creature, Spirit of the Labyrinth is so easy to get rid of. It's not even going to have that much impact.

January 21, 2014 11:20 a.m.

I don't know how much the new Infest + scry and Bile Blight is going to position esper but probably quite a bit more effective. It will make MBD almost unstopable as I have no doubt. So other aggro has no prayer.

January 21, 2014 1:53 p.m.

Rev won't fall as the feild will be MBD and Esper that is my speculation because of the formentioned cards.

While MBD and Esper will continue to be powerful, White Weenie is going to be a strong contender. Selesnya is also getting a huge boost. Hopefully we'll see many more deck archetypes in play.

@ColdHeartedSith: ... I was simply stating a fact. If you're too butt-hurt to play Standard because of one new removal spell, there are certainly different formats that need more players.

@civilized people: I'm not saying it's going to be an auto-include in Legacy or Modern, but the new anti-draw Spirit is definitely interesting. I know Lightning Bolt and Electrolyze are cards, but t's just another thing you'd need to deal with before letting your deck do what it does.

January 21, 2014 3:09 p.m.

As Zandl hinted, if a player has to spend a turn killing your 3/1, then you have successfully slowed them down, which is exactly what SotL is supposed to do.

As an added bonus, SotL is (clearly) not going to be the best card in your deck. When it can slow your opponent down by a turn while filtering removal away from your better cards, you come out with a win, albeit a subtle one.

Lots of counter spells in standard too, doesn't mean controls favorite draw will stop being used because someone might try and stop it.

January 21, 2014 6:35 p.m.

My point was I'm invested in standard R/W devotion which wins and keeps up with MBD and Esper but mass -2 and -3 effects stop aggro devotion dead by wipe of all my devotion savy creatures and boros charm don't matter with -2 or -3 effects so my good deck is kaput. I wouldn't risk 30 running it in a Diamond or Open after BOTG hits. Thats just how its gonna be. I am done hi-jacking the thread I gave my opinion on S.Rev @zandl
