Stormbreath Dragon

Hey guys, so I pulled a Stormbreath Dragon at the prerelease. I never play red, so I certainly want to trade this away. What do you guys think, should I trade now while his price is high? Or do you think it will jump up even more?

Thanks for the advice!

I would trade it now because I don't see Stormbreath Dragon climbing much higher in price. It has good static abilities, but the monstrous cost is rather high, and the triggered ability is only inconsistently powerful.

It also doesn't currently blow an entire deck out like its predecessor did (Thundermaw Hellkite vs. Lingering Souls tokens). Not to mention Thundermaw Hellkite was a 5/5.

I pulled two of those at the pre-release in the same pool. That alone nearly paid for both trips, because its a $25 dollar card. The other three temples helped cover the extra costs.

Stormbreath Dragon is at its peak it won't go any higher so you should trade it now. It will likely fall to about $10-15 dollars.

He's great in Limited... but I think that's about it.

Played against him twice in the pre-release, and it really was just a 5 drop 4/4 Flying, Haste. - Essentially a more expensive Archwing Dragon that may stay around if your opponents let it.

Sure, that's not horrible, but at a 5 drop, you usually want something more... unless you are playing controlish...

If he ends up being played in Standard, it's really going to be for lack of a better option. If that's the case, the game really has slowed.

There's no arguing that Thundermaw Hellkite is better, but depending on how prominent white removal like Detention Sphere and Chained to the Rocks become, and how much Archangel of Thune , Angel of Serenity etc get played, he may stay about the same. I can't see him going up, but i could see him being used as a 2 or 3-of in a lot of sideboards and maybe as a control finisher.

What would you like for it? I am interested in obtaining a storm breath dragon.

Only value i can see to him is in a casual Nin, the Pain Artist EDH that punish opponents for having cards in their hand... Other than that he will bet too slow for most formats...

Thanks for the opinions, everyone! I'm still going to trade him away, but I am seeing a far bit of reasoning as to why he will take Thundermaw's place just fine (the pro-white argument, no more Souls, etc) and that he may be good for Modern (I never play that format, so I am clueless there). It'll be interesting to see what happens with him.
