other than the fact that Thoughtseize is in standard. why is it soooooo much more than Distress . its only one more mana and you dont have to pay life

you can play Thoughtseize turn 1 and life is a resource, don't be afraid to use it.

One more mana matters way more than you might think, especially in eternal formats.

Also Distress can only be played in mono or heavy black decks. Thoughtseize can be splashed. Thoughtseize is also a rare that's only been printed twice whereas Distress is a common that's been printed three times.

T1 can prevent a lot of decks from doing broken things. For example, if I'm on the draw against G/W auras and I play Thoughtsieze on my turn 1 I can get rid of Fleecemane Lion or Voice of Resurgence before they are able to play to on T2.

This is the same kind of comparison people like to draw between Tarmogoyf and Lhurgoyf . The cards just aren't on the same power level.

First, the difference between a 1-drop and 2-drop utility spell is amazing. As a 1-drop, Thoughtseize is usable, but not intrusive. It offers a very solid turn one play, and it doesn't really encroach on your mana rationing in later turns, even if you draw into one and want to cast it. Distress is a 2-drop. Additionally, it's a double black 2-drop, which means you can't splash for it very well, and you need to have two black lands in your first two turns to be able to cast it immediately. Even then, you're looking at a turn-two cast at the earliest.

Second, the 2 life you lose when Thoughtseize resolves is not really a big deal. Many people choose to split the discard spell lineup in their Modern decks between Thoughtseize and Inquisition of Kozilek to mitigate some of the disadvantage, but 2 life is honestly an acceptable loss for the kind of power Thoughtseize offers.

Allow me to quote the card Dark Confidant on this one.

"Greatness at any cost."

That about sums up any black card you should be playing in eternal formats.
