What gives with his sudden surge in price over the last week? Went from avg ~$2 on 1/18 up to ~$8 and is now at ~$6. Is he all of a sudden seeing a ton of play somewhere?
I don't play enough Modern to know, but that would make sense. 2 to U or B and a draw engine? It's too bad, I'm working on a budget tribal Rogue deck and he just can't be a thing for me now. :(

It's because of that one guy at my LGS playing a singleton copy of it. It might just be the most that card's been purchased in years (just kidding).

It probably has more to do with True-Name Nemesis . Sygg, River Cutthroat curves into True-Name Nemesis and gives it a Curiosity . Could also have something to do with EDH and being a decent enough general or played in Oloro, Ageless Ascetic .
I'm not sure though, that would be my guess.

I checked it out, and apparently Sygg, River Cutthroat is played as a 1- or 2-of in Legacy Merfolk decks for the exact reason that sylvannos brought up.

I don't know of anything. Maybe Modern devotion? My first guess is casual/EDH or speculators, but Modern might be possible.
