I want opinions and what price you think they will be they will be and if you don't know what I am talking about http://www.wizards.com/Magic/tcg/article.aspx?x=mtg/tcg/theros/cig#

Moved to Economics because this discussion will be inextricably tied to economics.

Ashiok will likely slip in price due to it's intense specializationll, I think it will only see mostly casual and maybe EDH play.Xenagos is kind of a toss up, I think he won't be very relevant until Ravnica rotates, then we'll see maybe he'll become more useful and go up then. Off bat I think he will drop in price thoughElspeth, however, I think is gonna be one of the top money rares of the set, hands down

Xelagos will no doubt see standard play and, if Domri Rade is any indication, he will be very successful, driving his price up in the $20s.

Elspeth really right now has no place in standard. Even for a midrange-control deck a lot of the time 3 soldiers is not what you want to be doing turn 6 and the -3 can be irrelevant against many decks. Ashiok seems ok but will not be played much and will most likely be around 5$ after a while. Xenagos however will cost a bunch at least 20 dollars because hes exactly want you want to do with aggro gruul

Just for reference, Elspeth is at $25, Ashiok is around $20-$25 and Xenagos is at $40, right now.

Thats pretty much what I thought. I personally like Ashiok because I run a blue black control and was thinking about putting planeswalkers in but that seems like the right choice because it fits in the drownyard type deck.

I think Xenagos is too high, and I'm happy I pre-ordered Elspeth when she was $20. I thought about getting Ashiok, but I don't see a need for him at the moment.

None of my friends like the new Ellie, but I love her. I'll always love her.

It's a shame that her second & third abilities are so meh, but her + is ridiculous. I love it.

I'm impressed with all of them, and could see all of them in Standard play. Ashiok is my favorite so far. I could imagine playing a creature-less Dimir or Esper control deck, and using Ashiok as a win con. I would happily pay $30 for him.

Speaking of Planeswalkers, is Dack Fayden still expected to appear in this set?

I love Ashiok, at least for now. I just started playing Control, and she seems like such deviant fun to use :P. I hate Xenagos, but that's just because he's busted (I think he'll be one of those planeswalkers that will define the set for a good long while until people start directly countering decks that want him, but he won't drop because it'll still be a valid deck archetype). I want to love Elspeth, I really do, but this iteration of her doesn't belong anywhere. She has too high of a CMC for a White Weenie deck (which would love her), but her abilities aren't relevant enough to do much in a midrange or control. Also, none of these planeswalkers have inherent defence (you could make an argument about the tokens, but I wouldn't agree :P)

I think she'd be a great finisher in Standard UWx builds. I have a hard time believing that opponents can consistently deal with 3 soldiers a turn. She would just overwhelm just about everything once she gets going.

Assemble the Legion is a better token generator than Elspeth. It comes down sooner and is harder to remove.

September 6, 2013 11:58 p.m.

Jay says... #14

But you forget... Enchantments aren't going to be hard to remove in Theros. They'll be mainboarded in everything. There will be hate everywhere. Ellie just worries about Dreadbore .

Plus, even if subpar, Assemble the Legion only has one ability. Ellie still has the options if the need exists.

Kasres says... #15

Yes, but if you're at 6 mana, typically your opponent is at 6-10 mana (depending on color and purpose of the deck). If your opponent can't win/can't handle a single planeswalker, then they are in bad shape anyway. An aggro deck will have re-stabilized by the time Elspeth hits the field (assume the pilot knows how not to overextend), Control should have the mana to simply say no, and midrange will have the fatties to make your soldiers either worthless or simply dead with some monstrous trigger or something similar.

Those could basically all be said for Assemble the Legion , as well.

And, as a lesser bonus, she's playable in Esper and Bant.

September 7, 2013 12:01 a.m.

Kasres says... #17

True, and I'm not saying she's worthless. It just seems like she gets outclassed so easily. Depending on the deck, I'm certain I'd have a more relevant six-drop. Also, in Control, I'd probably have to leave at least two mana open at all times, thus making her a turn-eight drop assuming no ramping of any kind. I could maybe see her in a WG deck, what with the mana dorks and so forth. This Ellie on turn 4 could be devastating for an aggressive deck, but turn 6 is asking a lot from an Aggro deck that isn't actually supposed to have 6 lands on field before their opponent is dead.

And similarly, I'm not saying she's fantastic.

I'd be totally fine with her being an $8 card, more for me haha. Definitely no Knight Errant, but I still think she's hard to answer, holds her own (IMO) with the tokens, and can overrun a lot of decks.

Although, imagine this curve in some interesting token homebrew: Ogre Battledriver , Assemble the Legion , New Ellie.

Someone make this.

September 7, 2013 12:06 a.m.

Slycne says... #19

ENEyman It actually takes Assemble the Legion 5 turns to catch up to Elspeth, even played the turn earlier.

T5 Assemble the Legion , T6 Elspeth = T6 token start coming out for both.

0+1=1

0+3=3

-

1+2=3

3+3=6

-

3+3=6

6+3=9

-

6+4=10

9+3=12

-

10+5=15

12+3=15

15+6=21

15+3=18

Obviously Assemble the Legion really starts to take off after this, but if either one is in play for 5 turns - you aught to have a hard time loosing that game.

Although Ellie doesn't poop hasty dudes

ljs54321 says... #21

With Ogre Battledriver in play she does (which you suggested lol)...and don't forget to add Purphoros to that lineup to net an extra 2 damage on top of all that

September 7, 2013 12:30 a.m.

Jay says... #22

That actually sounds like 's a rad deck. Plus Chained to the Rocks, Fiendslayer Paladin , Boros Reckoner , Brave the Elements ...

Damn

September 7, 2013 12:33 a.m.

ljs54321 says... #23

Might as well throw in Hundred-Handed One with Indestructibility so you can go all out every turn and still be able to block essentially everything

September 7, 2013 12:35 a.m.

Jay says... #24

Ehhhhh, I think you'd lose stability there. It would gain fun though.

September 7, 2013 12:37 a.m.

KingSorin says... #25

Why not just a Guardian of the Gateless + Holy Mantle . So much fun. Especially since they both pop up easily in gatecrash limited... hmm... Just add Hold the Gates for 5 damage a turn to them, and none to you :D On topic though, spawning a 2/2 haste every turn is really helpful for aggro, and 3 1/1s may not seem great, but every turn, as a plus ability, it's really strong. the other dude just looks weird. I can see uses for it, but it's so weird.
