Thinking about buying a RTR Box to hold onto.

I am thinking about buying a couple RTR boxes to hold onto for a long term profit. I don't have any intention to open them, but just hold onto them.

is this a good idea? or Should I try buying a couple boxes of other sets currently in standard to sell? My LGS also Occasionally has a box of Avacyn Restored, should I just buy one of those next time I see one?

If you're looking at LONG term value, buying a sealed box and holding onto it isn't a bad idea. It will go up in value over time, since the set is no longer in print. Something like RTR also wouldn't be a bad choice, as all of the guild mechanics and such make it a fun thing to draft, which will help a sealed box hold its value. If you go on ebay and try to buy a box from an old set, literally every single one of them (baring core sets of course) is going for more now than when it was in standard. Again, this only holds true if you keep it sealed. As soon as its opened, especially a set like RTR with all the box mapping shenanigans, its value will plummet.

Keep in mind that MTG isn't garunteed to stay around forever, so be wary. But other than that, it seems like a good idea to me.

Ravnica was such a popular block, original and newer, that it's one of the better sets you could do it with. There are enough money cards and you hit on nostalgia.

I guess I'll be the one to tell you that you're going to be waiting for a while. It'll take years for you to realize any appreciable increase in value, and by the time you account for shipping to buy/sell (assuming you don't buy/sell exclusively locally), then you're going to be putting yourself out for several years before you can break even again.

Stockpiling isn't a simple buy-and-win game. You need to account for time, shipping, and other expenses.

I'm holding onto a box of each non-core set but not for profit, just for personal nostalgia. My daughter is a teenager and she and I play magic together, and I'm thinking that 20 years from now I can con her into coming to bringing the grandkids to visit by bribing her with "we're going to crack open that old box of Innistrad! Think we'll see a Lili?" Yeah, I have a really long-term view of things. But I don't think buying a single box for profit is a good plan. Buy a case maybe and store it for at least 7 years, then see what you've got.

Also, take inflation into account. At least in Norway we have something around 3% inflation each year, so you would need to sell it at 3% higher price each year to break even, and that quickly adds up :)
