Thinking of buying a booster box...

So, I have been thinking of buying a booster box for a few reasons.
1) My collection is small, as I got back into the game only withing the last year.
2) Trade fodder because I have nothing anyone wants.
3) Wondering if you can use one box to essentially buy another box selling singles from the first box? Not much I need out of DTK for my current decks, but I see the value of alot of the cards and think if I get lucky, I could end up with either another box like KTK or FRF or enough money to buy singles I need.

The best chance for #3 happening to some extent is buying a MM2015 box. You probably won't make the money back to buy another, but it'll grow your collection with eternal staples, which is always nice. Not as nice if you play Standard exclusively, but it's a thought.
If you play Standard, I'd just look for singles and buy those to assemble a deck you want.

You and a friend should both buy a booster box and open them together. WotC says Friendship maximizes you chances of getting a really good card. For instance, I opened a DTK box with my friend and I got the new Narset planeswalker and he got the new Sarkhan planeswalker. The more friends you have, the better. In fact, just go to the card shop where everyone is your friend except for the one guy who sits in the corner and only buys booster packs and drinks the beer. You know which one I'm talking about and open it there, because you'll get at least 36 rare cards, guaranteed by WotC.

Order a box of Modern Masters 2015. Most places will let you place an order at $240. My local shop let me order one for $210, maybe yours will be similar.
It comes with 24 booster packs as opposed to the normal 36 but each pack has an MSRP of $10. Before long, shops will gouge the price over $10. The set is going to be jam packed with modern staples, many of which will also be staples in legacy, vintage, and commander (great trade fodder). This is probably your best chance to get the most bang for your buck since usually you almost never make profit from buying boxes (though buying in bulk is always more cost efficient than buying single packs).

Not advertising or anything, but maybe you could take a page of this guy's book: Booster Box Game

Bear in mind that that guy mostly regard the economic value. If you're buying a box for your reason 1) and reason 2), I think it's valid buying a box. And it's fun cracking open all those packs :)
If you can't really spare the expense then maybe find a friend or two and buy the box together
For me, there's always a guy in my LGS that sells all the uncommon/common in bulk(500-600 pcs) for 10$-15$. So there's that. Maybe you could check in your LGS

If you're buying a booster box for reasons 1 and 2, awesome.
As for making money back, that almost never happens. If you need singles, go buy singles and save your money.
