Thoughtseize? Buy or Wait?

I know that Thoughtseize sees play in almost all of the formats if not all, and I was wondering, do you think Thoughtseize prize will continue to rise , or will it drop back down. I was wondering as I was considering buying a few more for a new deck, and currently they are 30$ on starcitygames.

I wish people would just not even consider SCG when thinking about card value.

Thoughtseize was $60-80 at one point. I'd get them now.

Yea I know that, I was just using SCG as an example. Do you think they will drop, stay stationary, or increase? Thank you for the input.

Get them now. They will go up again when they stop being printed. Same for fetches and probably Chord.

Theros Thoughtseize will hit $50 a few months after rotation easily.

A few MONTHS? God no. A few YEARS is more likely. There will still be a tonne of people wanting to trade off their Thoughtseize s months after rotation. Then you have to consider idea two, RTR and KTK are the "get everyone into modern" plan. Shocks and fetches were the biggest barrier to get into modern, and now that they have been reprinted, a lot of standard players will evolve into modern players since they now have the mana base to do so. So they will keep every modern staple, like Thoughtseize , and won't need to buy anymore when they swap. So there won't be that much demand. You also have to remember that the lorwyn Thoughtseize still has aesthetic value, which, for everyone going into competitive play, is really relevant.

Personally, I would wait until post-rotation to buy, as demand should decrease when it leaves standard. Don't wait too long though, because it will rise back up once it has been out of print for a while.

Femme_Fatale Nah, I do not think it will take that long for the price to return to Thoughtseize at all after rotation. It will drop slightly $20'ish before rotation, then quickly make its way back to $40-$50

Its always high in demand, its eternal, its one of the only, if not the only reprint currently in standard that is still demanding a massive price tag. It is argued as the "Best" card in MTG. Anyway you look at this its a solid investment.

@xGhostx: Just all of my "wat?"

The original Thoughtseize is $40~$50 post rotation, and only because it was printed in a set that wasn't drafted that much.

"A few months" is just wishful thinking. Almost all of the Modern and Legacy players I know already have playsets. Thoughtseize was one of the first cards people started picking up on release. Femme_Fatale is right--the demand just isn't there to justify $40 even a year after its release.

Snapcaster Mage isn't even $40 lol. To put that in perspective:

Legacy most used cards:

Vintage:

Modern:

Alright, we will see I guess. I am still holding strong on this, as well as many of the local MTG Financial guys in my LGS.

We have seen all stores sell out of Theros Thoughtseize not just for current play, but in long term secured binders.

Again, maybe I may be paying to much into my local.... I guess time will tell.

I'd expect Thoughtseize to be pretty stable post rotation, sort of like how Abrupt Decay has behaved. It'll eventually rise, but I don't see it being on the immediate horizon.

I say buy them directly after rotation, or when you see them drop to about 15$. KTK, RTR, and MMA helped many players get into modern, and so a lot of people aren't going to be selling the things when they rotate out because of their value in modern and beyond, but that means there won't be a huge demand for them.

I have to agree with ghosts last post. Thoughtseize are selling for $20-$25 like hot cakes locally with one shop pricing them at $30 (not sure they're selling though). Every time my lcs gets one in its gone within a day at $20-$25. It's odd because I can't seem to trade my playset away online but people at FNM always want them. I bought a foil playset for $220 so I'm banking on it rising post rotation!
