Hi, I am relatively new to magic and I am looking for tips on buying collectors boxes, specifically for the LOTR set. I love collecting cool cards, but I have mostly just been buying singles. I am really excited to collect cards from the new LOTR set, but given how expensive the boxes are, I am wondering if it’s worth it to preorder a box… I’m not really interested in buying a lottery ticket for any of the hot rare items from the set, I just want a good value for a bundle of cool cards from the set. Should I just wait for the set to be out for a while and pick up my favorite singles? Or is it likely the price will go down on the collectors boxes after a while (maybe once somebody finds the ring) and I should pick one up then? All in all just looking for general advice from any veterans.

When I was younger I bought packs because it was fun to get random stuff (TOTALLY not gambling lol). In the last 5-8 years I’ve bought less than ten packs (generally as gifts or flights of fancy). I almost exclusively buy singles for everything. Having said that: I have started buying 800 card boxes of bulk for one of my kids as gifts, because when you’re starting up... it’s all just as fun. I love owning cards, and the bulk buys scratch whatever card-buying itch I have any more. Bulk for life; if you know you know.

Buying a box especially a collectors box is buying a lottery ticket. Buy the singles
