Was this a smart move? (Traded Sensei's Divining Top)

Hey everyone. Today I trade the foil Sensei's Divining Top from "From the Vault: Exiled".

The whole deal was me offering the Top and 2x Courser of Kruphix for the following:

Summoner's Pact (Modern Masters), Green Sun's Zenith (Mirrodin Beseiged Foil), Cryptic Command (Modern Masters 2015) and Wilt-Leaf Liege also MM2015.

My biggest concern is "What if they unbanned Top in modern?". On the one hand it's unlikely but on the other if it were unbanned I can see it's price more than doubling as it's a beloved card.

My second concern is I think the Wilt-Leaf Liege is a sort of fad. I mean it's certainly great for Siege Rhino but it matters most against other Abzan decks running the Rhino and against control is just another slow card. Sort of related, if somebody uses Liliana of the Veil's +1 and I discard the Liege, does it then go onto the battlefield? And I suppose the question is the same for Loxodon Smiter.

The guy wanted to use Card Kingdom. I usually use TCG because it sorts prices by condition and it makes the trades smaller but I wasn't about to argue because i've been trying to trade this thing for months so we did end up using Card Kingdom.

The Trading Post is for organizing trades with other users. If you're discussing the viability or value of a trade with someone else, please post in Economics.

Also, rules questions should be asked in the Q&A.

Yes, you can put Wilt-Leaf Liege and Loxodon Smiter onto the battlefield off of a Liliana of the Veil +1. The abilities check the controller of the discard effect, not the player making the choice.

To further answer your question, they will never unban top in modern. Makes the games take too long and they don't even like it in legacy. Only reason it's not banned in legacy is because it's legacy.

Thanks for moving the thread. I'll be sure to post in the right places in the future. And thanks for the ruling it was making my head spin. It definitely explains part of the appeal for it in modern.

Yeah it certainly won't be unbanned in modern. We'd be more likely to see Second Sunrise come back.

As for the value of the trade, at the end of the day, are you happy with it?

I think now is a good time to grab stuff that was printed in Modern Masters 2015. It's not the worst trade.

liege isn't a fad card. GW aggro has been hyper fringe modern for A LONG time and it was built around wiltleaf. The rhino just made it a much more potent strategy.

Look if you play modern that was a great trade. If you play legacy, it wasn't bad, it just wasn't great.

@ aeonstoremyliver, yeah i'm pretty happy with the cards I got. The Cryptic was the best part for me. The guy who taught me how to play MTG swore on it's greatness and though I haven't used it in 60 card decks at least for Commander I certainly agree with him.

@ Serendipitous_Hummingbird: Definitely going to only be playing modern for a long time. Really I don't know if i'll ever get into Legacy so now that I have more Cryptics for modern and a valuable card that's trade bait (The Liege) this just made sense for me.

After hearing how unlikely it is that they'd unban Top in modern I am definitely glad that I made the trade happen.

Pretty decent trade. I really wish I had a top, and my friend has 4 or 5 I think. I just wish I had enough to trade for one. On the other hand, I think you traded into safe cards, and got good value. CC is something that I would also love to own.

I think courser might fall a bit. GSZ might see modern one day though doubtful.

Really one of those trades where you look at it, and say seems even.

It's a good trade because the cards you traded into are at their lowest point price wise due to modern masters whereas Top is at a mid point. The cards you got are decent in the meta and should gain value.

Value wise this trade was ridiculously good for you so I'm not understanding the question here.

Eh i'm not really worried about the trade anymore. In fact I felt so comfortable with it that I traded for another Cryptic Command the day after re-orders for MM2015 being announced.

This time I gave:
Balefire Dragon
Leyline of Anticipation F
Asceticism

Got:
Cryptic Command

This time the guy went by the prices that showed up when you searched for the cards on TCG and not by the High/Mid/Low prices. So basically he valued his own Cryptic Command @ 30.00 instead of 40.00.

I felt bad so afterwards I gave him a Ob Nixilis of the Black Oath. Still came out ahead by like $4.00 and he was happy because he admitted he wanted the Ob because he "looked so cool". Huzzah!
