Why is foil Ashen Rider $10? I understand it's a strictly better Angel of Despair but that doesn't see any play.

Used in legacy and EDH. Legacy Show and Tell /Sneak Attack /Eureka . EDH because it is a bomb when flickered or in an infinite sacrifice engine.

Legacy people like their foils. Just compare a foil and nonfoil Thalia, Guardian of Thraben , Deathrite Shaman , any of the "sword of X and X"s or any other popular legacy card.

Look at the price difference of Spell Pierce compared to foils. I just read yesterday that somebody sold theirs for $140.

miracleHat, was that one foreign? Because they seem to sell for around 35$.

I actually don't know. I just read the story and that is the quick summary including everything that i heard that was important. Some people tried to undercut $140 and sell it for $130...

It was just meant as a joke, but wow.

Swan Song is pretty significant, too.

Foil Stoneforge Mystic averages $195. Legacy players love to foil out their decks because there's nowhere else to go from there except Vintage.

They also seem to have ridiculous pools of money it would appear.

Take a look at Foil Daze . Average of $3, foil average of $118. From Nemesis of course.

Just nitpicking, but it's not strictly better as it costs 1 mana more.

Joebobpickle says... #13

Yeah, but exiling is better, plus, 2 triggers.

KingSorin says... #14

yea i know, but strictly better means you'd rather it in essentially every situation. Lightning Bolt is strictly better than shock as it costs the same mana but deals 1 more damage. (of course there will be the time that your opponent Wild Ricochet s it and ends up winning off it, but it's better in pretty much all cases) Cards can't be strictly better if they cost more mana. If you're a reanimator deck stuck on 7 land, would you rather Ashen Rider or Angel of Despair in your hand? It's better, i agree, but not strictly.

Aaahhh... Sigh... I have a friend who's exactly like you. He's the best player I know, except he's very technical and sometimes annoying.

May 3, 2014 7:04 p.m.

If you don't want to raise the ire of technical people, then don't use the technical term 'Strictly Better'. Go with 'generally better' of just 'better'.

At Theros pre-release I opened a foil Ashen Rider and immediately traded it for a Stormbreath Dragon 1 to 1. (both were around 22$ at the time).

I have yet to open a foil Mythic. I have only owned one (excluding Duel Deck foils) mythic foil and I recently traded that away for some cards for 8.5^2 Tails.

Be lucky you haven't pulled a foil Search the City , like I have.
