What are good investments right now with store credit? i got 80 bucks credit for FNM last night and have no idea what to get. I only play standard and i don't really want to start investing in modern/legacy/a format i cant afford in the long run. What cards do you guys see going up in value ?

I would just get shocklands for your standard decks, then when they rotate wait for them to rise in price.

Shocklands are a good bet.

Shocklands are almost always a good investment. So are cards that will be/already are modern/legacy staples. An example would be something like Thoughtseize , which will probably continue to go up after it stops being printed.

I actually don't anticipate shocks spiking in price. They'll have a gradual incline if cards like Snapcaster Mage are any indication of recent trends. However, they're certainly a safe investment.

You could also just pay your way through tournament entries if your store allows you to do that with credit. It's a nice way to continue accruing value, especially since there aren't many surefire investments to be made right now. Snapcaster Mage might be in a decent position, and the shocks are stable, but nothing screams "I'm going to double your money."

You can always invest later if you encounter a card like that.

Personally, I'm stockpiling Thespian's Stage s. They're super cheap, and super broken with Dark Depths , so once they go out of print for awhile, they should creep up at least a little. Think like penny stocks

Besides shocks, I'd go with Mutavault . Standard legal, and guaranteed to stay valuable after rotation.

One thing I'd like to point out - playing Modern is actually a LOT cheaper than playing Standard. You can build a competitive mono-colored deck for around the same price as a Standard deck, but it'll never rotate out. Think of how many different Standard decks you have to build each year, and compare the annual price. If you spend that store credit on Modern staples, you'll be about 1/4 of the way to a pretty decent deck already.

I think Snapcaster Mage is probably your best bet. It's probably going to spike in price fairly soon (as in within the year) and when it does, it is going to be expensive. It sees heavy play in Modern and Legacy, and now that DRS is out of the picture, Snappy's got very little in his way. I've recently stocked up on them.

@SharuumNyan: Mutavault is probably not a good decision right now. It just spiked due to Modern season. The time to get them was about a month ago.
