What's Snappy doing?

Snapcaster Mage has been predicted by many to go up to $50-70. However, following GP Richmond, he's dropped a dollar in the last couple of days. Why's he suddenly stopped increasing? And is he going to keep decreasing, or will he stabilize or increase again?

I'm guessing his increase has leveled off temporarily due to him only being in one top 8 decklist at GP Richmond. Birthing Pod is getting close to $20 after having 5 top 8 decks at Richmond.

He'll go back up when Birthing Pod is banned. Nothing can stop the march of blue.

He won't go up much more, he's only a rare - not that hard to come by and the price increase was only driven by a sudden rush to obtain copies. Now that he's not even appearing in top decks he'll plateau - the demand is subsiding.

Krosan Tusker Not really. I still got a few Snapcaster Mage at a fairly low price, and if I want to, I can just sell the rest off now and get almost $120 back, meaning that I effectively paid $30 for 3 Snapcaster Mage , which is by no means a bad deal.

ChiefBell The fact that he's only a rare doesn't change much. Noble Hierarch is a rare, Goyf and Bob were both rares before MMA, fetches are rare, Cryptic Command is a rare. The list goes on.

TitansFTW - Your point about Snapcaster being a rare while Tarmogoyf and Dark Confidant are is a bit misleading. All the cards you referenced (aside from Noble Hierarch ) were printed before WotC decided to make Mythic Rares a thing. Looking back I think that Goyf and Bob would have been mythics if they had been around when those cards were printed.

True, but Noble Hierarch is a great example by itself. It's basically just a Birds of Paradise with exalted, and it somehow becomes $60. Snappy on the other hand is copies 5-8 of all your best spells, with a 2/1 body to boot. It seems like Snappy should be worth more, in my opinion.

In my opinion, anything that is blue should be worth more. Snapcaster Mage , Time Walk , Timetwister , Ancestral Recall , Jace, the Mind Sculptor ... Notice how those are all blue...

It's just that snappy is arguably falling out of demand. They all will soon really. Over the last few week things have been going mental, soon enough it'll all die down again.

that price graph is ridiculous. There is no way he's going to keep going up. Just look at it!

A lot of modern playable cards have done this recently.

Snapcaster Mage is most definitely still appearing in top tier decks lol. Just because he was a 4 of in one GP top 8 doesn't change the fact that he is played in a very large percent of the meta, much of the tier 1 decks using him.

His price will likely decrease then plateau for a while and then steadily increase over the long haul.

to add: Modern is at the point that if you are playing blue, you better be playing Snappy. And if you are not, you better have a damn good reason for it.

he was in standard as a rare very recently, give it time and he will rise.

I completely agree that he's fantastic but I don't think that demand can support the massive spike that we've seen. He will most definitely decrease again and then very slowly rise.

I agree that he will fall right now and increase in the long run. I think most modern staples will

When his price is high, people argue how great he is...

When his price drops, people argue that he's only a rare...

There's a legitimate reason for his price to increase, but there is not a legitimate reason to see the crazy price spike we have. There's a massive economic difference between controlled appreciation and and 'oh shit we need to grab as many as we can right now'. The price spike subsides quickly, appreciation won't. What we need to do is justify why a spike happened and then why it isn't realistic to expect it to continue.

Snapcaster Mage is going to stay at $30-40 for a while, then Plateau at $80-100 while blue fetches are $150 apiece. Modern prices are quickly spiraling out of control, barring another reprint.

it's not as accurate to compare Snapcaster Mage to Noble Hierarch and Tarmogoyf .

Both hierarch and goyf were printed in less popular sets, and not as many were opened.

Snapcaster Mage was printed in a very popular set, after modern as a format was introduced. Innistrad was recorded to be one of the most-opened sets to date, partly because people knew the power that snap would bring to modern.

it could also have to do with him hitting 35 on tcg, and people who had dozens of them figured selling 20 snap casters for $700 when they got them for less than $300, i know i pitched all mine happy to double my money & keep personal playsets and invest in legacy cards
