What's up with Chalice of the Void?

I was browsing through binders today, ya'know, cause I do the trading stuff, and I saw the tappedout listed price of Chalice being $25 and I was like "Oh, a bug in the system, I'd better check TCGPlayer." However, I found that Chalice of the Void is actually $25 on TCG. What the heck?! I remember this thing at $4 and less, and never paid any attention to it. What happened?

I get that it's good vs Delver, but a $20 price jump? That's just ridiculous.

it's become very popular in modern and legacy. Treasure Cruise lead to an increase in u/r low mana decks (delver, burn, etc) and chalice is a great sideboard card against many of the 1 or 2 mana spells those decks play.

It's good against a lot of modern decks.

It's pretty much the ultimate SB card in legacy and modern.

It was also just showcased in the GP Omaha top 8. I'm sure that's why it has surged in the last couple of days.

Its great against combo, delver, basically anything with blue. There was a buyout on that and Orzhov Pontiff, understandably so. It was as high as 30 on mtgstocks just the other day but it fell back a bit again today, and I expect it will stabilize around 20 and rise back a little bit over modern season and then most likely drop when MM2 hits.

And infect to some extent (x = 1 means significantly fewer pump spells, x = 2 means less creatures).

NorthernRaven If you can't beat it, join it. Play Chalice mainboard for 0 to stop them from playing their own Chalices. (Or just play Cavern of Souls, but that's beside the point.)

Chalice is also a key component in Legacy MUD. I like it as a stellar sideboard card. Set at one it screws soooo many decks in Legacy.

it does hose a lot of legacy and modern decks, but the huge spike happened after KTK released, which is why i think treasure cruise and the decks it spawned are the main reason for the spike. also a likely buyout as someone else said.

graph of MM chalice

Foil MM is around $50.00 and Mirrodin is around $65.00. Holy crap this card jumped overnight from $8-10 to $20-25!!

So what's this about a buyout??? Being a colorless artifact, it can go in virtually any sideboard, so I can see the appeal. However, I may be missing the demand. Is this primarily due to Treasure Cruise in Delver and what not?

aeonstoremyliver Chalice can deal with so many decks at once. Storm, Delver, White Weenies.

I posted on this site about a month ago when I saw the price jump on chalice go from $5 to $15. Link. A buyout happened then, which is why I'm surprised that there appears to be another buyout so soon after it going up in price so much. I thought $10 was a big enough jump that it would stabilize there, but I was apparently wrong. However it is following a trend I've noticed of powerful SB cards spiking around the time of the ban/unban announcement. Last year Ensnaring Bridge spiked from around $10 to $20 where it's still at today (likely due to Zoo being percieved as making a comeback after the unbanning of Wild Nacatl). If Cruise gets the banhammer in either eternal format, I suspect chalice will fall back (slowly) to the $15-$18 range, but the time to pick up a playset for $20 is no more (unless we get a reprint which I believe is unlikely).

On a side note, if you happen to have a bunch of Chokes that you're not using, they've jumped from $1 to $6 recently as well. People sure want to hate on delver right now lol.

Ensnaring Bridge jumped because 8rack got popular.
