I was doing some trading at my school's Magic Club and I traded for two Shardless Agent s since I thought it looked cool and would be fun to play. I later checked to see that the average price is $17 (tcgplayer). What's the deal here? Why is it so expensive?
I thought Planechase 2012 wasn't allowed to be used in Modern?

It isn't. Shardless Agent is only playable in Legacy, Vintage, and Commander.

Heavily used in "legacy" cascade decks. I think the most common deck for it is called Shardless BUG.

Shardless Agent is not legal in anything but Legacy, Vintage and Commander according to its Gatherer page, this should be true for the rest of the Planechase stuff as well.

Ok so now that the legality conflict has been worked out, are there any reasons other than Legacy cascade that it's so high in price?

The fact that it's been printed only once and only in a special product.

It's an amazing card in Legacy BUG decks that can cascade into Hymn to Tourach , Tarmogoyf , Baleful Strix , Thoughtseize and Dark Confidant .

because it is an out of print staple, used heavily in cascade-based modern decks.
