Counter Dice

As a newer player, should I invest in counter dice? They are 50 cents a piece at my LGS, or I can get the 36 die set. Is it worth it as a new(ish) player? Thanks

As a newer player I recommend the app MTG Familiar. :p Any fat packs...i think they're called booster packs now, will have a spin down, you do get them from sealed events. I've never gotten one at a draft, but I don't draft much. Haha.

First, welcome to Magic!
As others have said, spindown dice are nice, but not necessary at all. I actually prefer a small piece of paper or small notepad, so I can take notes and sort out it out easier if my opponent and I have a discrepancy of any sort. Plus if paper accidentally gets bumped we don't lose track of our life totals :-)
And yeah, Sealed is kind of like Draft, except you start out with 6 packs so you know all the cards you're going to get, up-front. At the start of every set there are big "Pre-release" Sealed events where everyone gets to try out the brand new cards for the first time, and Wizards always include a spindown die in the kit ... after a few new sets you'll probably have more dice than you know what to do with :-D

I agree with what others have said about never needing to purchase a life counter. Though, I would recommend getting a pack of d6s (six sided dice) though. They are pretty useful for representing tokens, +1/+1 counters, overflow HP if you go above 20, rolling to determine who goes first, or a number of other MTG related uses.
Most game stores will sell a pack of just d6s in assorted colours.

A cube of d6s is probably a worthwhile investment, they get used all the time for various counters, and will last you your entire Magic career barring theft or losing them.

I play a ton of magic across a bunch of formats. I've found what works for me is carrying around 8 or so D6s and 3 spindowns for planeswalkers. I don't really need more than that. My friend, on the other hand, carries a giant bag of dice. People have different needs.
As for keeping track of your life totals, I highly recommend getting a good notebook. You can easily track information that's revealed to you, card your opponent knows about, etc. along with your life total. Also, you can make remarks in the notebook about things you should remember later on. For example, you might have had two plays you could have made in a turn and want to ask your friend about it later that evening. It's also a great way to keep track of your winning record over time.

Thanks guys! Sounds like the general concensus is: notebooks work, life dice are not necessary, but getting some D6s is smart. Thanks guys for all the input, I appreciate it!

if you intend to regularly play sealed events *when new sets are released", you'll soon have more dice than you know what to do with. So no don't bother.
