deck boxes vs double sleeving

So given that my modern decks are now into the hundreds of pounds and there was a 'beer' incident the other day it's about time i started double sleeving. But will that render my current deck boxes useless? At the moment i use ultra pro side loaders but i have been browsing for something that can hold an EDH deck plus two modern decks with sideboard.

So if i have to buy something new it's not the end of the world but it is something i need to consider this before doing so. So anyone got an idea of what my options could be? Had thought was the dragon shield four compartment box but that won't fit a double sleeved deck per compartment with sideboard.

I suggest you to take a look at https://www.youtube.com/user/tolariancommunity for some hints and tips on the boxes to use (sleeves for double sleeving are Dragonshield outers and KMC "perfect fits" inners). I value this guy's opinion very much.

Dragonshield

These things hold over 100 cards sleeved, and are super cheap and super strong. Most of my EDH decks live in these.

Dual Flip

These are pretty awesome for EDH decks too, and would probably be great for 2-3 Modern decks + sideboards without getting too confusing if you sleeve all the decks differently

Planeswalker Flip

Like the previous but for one EDH deck (Or 60 card plus sideboard)

Pro Tower

I bought one of these the other day. Its awesome! Expensive, but damn its fun. It could hole one EDH and one Modern Deck plus sideboard. Or for me, and doubled up hydra deck, plus planechase cards and dice :-)

They are the ones I own, and use. Hope some of the links and opinions help.

I would always double sleeve your valuable or hard to find cards. My cube is probably 1/3 double sleeved (mainly because I am foiling it, and all the valuable cards are being doubled as they are discovered single sleeved, or as they are switched for other cards, or foil versions). All my EDH decks have the value cards double sleeved too. The only reason I have chosen 'value' cards so far, is cost. 900 card Cube plus 14 EDH decks is a shit load of sleeves as it is. Buying that many perfect fits on top of that is just harsh on the wallet lol

I use the following:

For EDH I use the Satin Pro Tower by Ultra Pro, very sturdy, feels great, plenty of room for a full EDH double sleeved deck (KMC Perfect fit + KMC Hyper Mat), and the addition of the lower storage compartment for dice and counters is icing on the cake.

For Modern / Stamdard I use the Leather Mana Flip Box, even with the flocking inside the box for added cushioning, plenty of room for 75 card double sleeved (KMC Perfect Fit + House Lannister) plus 2 dividers, and 12 sleeved tokens.

I previously used the Dragon Shield for my EDH deck, as it would hold the full double sleeved deck side loaded, with 13 sleeved tokens on top. Lid would sit a little proud, but not enough to be a problem.

For others decks, eg Legacy Illusions, and Pauper Faeries, I use Max Protection standard Flip Top Boxes, and they can handle 75 Double Sleeved with a divider perfectly well.

The only box style that I have ever break was a couple of Ultra Pro Plain type. Where the hinge area at the rear came away from the back part (Heat weld weakened over time)

any flimsy plastic deck boxes, and deck tins, I would like to add, they break, almost guaranteed, eventually, plus any that fasten with velcro are just garbage, the velcro will eventually come off from the deck box, making the deck box unreliable at staying closed. I tend to find, the thin plastic deck boxes, also come with velcro closure, so avoid them IMO. Magnetic closure is best by far, or like the plastic dragon shield ones i linked, they sort of vacuum close themselves, so no worries there either

I currently use the Ultra Pro satin tower. This thing is amazing. It can hold a double sleeved EDH and some dice, tokens, and counters. I double sleeve with KMC hypers + a KMC perfect fits.

You can also make one for yourself. I am in the process of building a case to carry a lot of decks and cube. There are also people who make handmade deck boxes online although they are a little pricey.

I actually ordered a hand made deck box from MTG custom deck boxes for being sick of not finding optional storing for my double-sleeved EDH. It cost quite much and the waiting time is insane but he does the coolest looking deck boxes I've ever seen. Otherwise I recommend the Satin Pro Tower as everyone else.

How long have you guys had the Satin Pro Tower? I had something similar a few years ago, but the thing came apart because the glue holding the inner compartment, to the outer colourful shell failed, so when you took the lid off, usually the bottom fell out too.... I didn't get the pro tower for fear the same would happen to this. It does look awesome.

If you're looking for inexpensive, I'd recommend using extra fat pack boxes. They easily hold 2 double sleeved edh decks with quite a bit of room left over, so it should easily hold what your 2 modern decks and an edh perfectly

I'm currently using KMC hypermats with Ultra Pro profit inners. Not much difference between kmc and ultra pro for perfect fits IMO, and ultra pros are a bit cheaper.

As for deck boxes, Legion boxes are really cheap and easily fit 75 double sleeved cards with room for tokens and a divider, or 100 single sleeved cards. Ultra Pro magnetic flip boxes are really nice too, though they can come open in a bag sometimes.

The pro tower things are nice too, but I haven't used them. I don't care for EDH, but please, please, don't keep your modern/legacy/standard/anything you're using for a tournament in a multi-deck deckbox. It will get you a game loss and you will be sad.

Even if you have both decks in different coloured sleeves? That seems pretty damn harsh.

At the moment i use a fat pack box to keep two deck boxes with singled sleeved modern decks in them and a loose EDH deck next to them, just about fits with a bit of wiggle room for my EDH deck. No doubt i could get all three decks in there double sleeved if i kept them loose but that's not something i'd be interested in doing. What would appeal to me along those lines however would be Dragon Shields four compartment deck box, but unfortunately it can't hold double sleeved decks. At least not without using one deck in each half in which case there'd be allot of space left over, shame they didn't build in more slots to adjust the compartment sizes in which case it may have worked.

Anyone know how many cards the Ultra Pro dual flip case will hold double sleeved? Does anyone else make dual flip deck boxes like these i can check out? If i can get both a EDH & Modern deck double sleeved into one with room for tokens in that little back compartment i think that's the best option for me atm beyond getting a custom wooden box which is pretty appealing.

In that respect I'm aware of a guy Aaron Cain who makes great custom wooden deck boxes but i'm not sure about pricing or availability, you can find his page on facebook by searching 'MTG Custom Deck Boxes'. My ideal box would have a double sleeved commander deck on one side a double sleeved modern on the other with built in divider for the sideboard. Then using the space left over between the two decks (obviously the EDH would be a larger compartment) to keep dice and counters in, perhaps having it raised up for easy access but leaving space for tokens. Essentially an all in one solution that doesn't involve gong down the deck vault route.

Thanks for the comments guys, very helpful

@PooPlayer You will only get a game loss if the cards in the deck box are in the same sleeves and are legal to play in the given format.

appears that the dual flip ultra pro will not hold a double sleeved EDH deck :(
