Question regarding coins in M:tG.

Since I'm planning to make a Chaosmonger Deck running Okaun, Eye of Chaos & Zndrsplt, Eye of Wisdom in the future (probably...) I just want to know what coins are DCI Sanctioned Legal. All I have are two Pokemon TCG coins; one with Dialga on the front, another with Fennekin on the front. If these aren't legal, maybe you could post some links to some I could use in these two's stead? Thanks for the help, if any. ^-^

I had a coin with Lugia on the front, but people were saying nope, use a d6 instead. This was long ago, but having dice instead puts less stress on your thumbs, and takes less time (coming from a fellow Zndrplt/Okaun user here).

What kind of d6 do you recommend, by any chance?

Chessex D6s are the best plastic dice you can buy. You can find a pack of Chessex d6s at every game store. You can also order them directly from the Chessex website, which has a large number of colour options to pick from.

If you want to be a bit more flashy, you can buy some dice carved from real stone or made of metal (there are even some made from meteorites or dinosaur bones on the market). They're beautiful, elegant, and have a very satisfying weight to them--though that all comes at a price.

Usually the problem people worry about is whether the coin is weighted to one side with the non-standard coins. If you're worried about it, either use a die or a regular US quarter/equivalent sized tender for your country. I used them in a draft and my opponent was fine with me using a challenge coin I had on me.

@cdkime: Thanks. I'll see what I can do with that if I can lay hand on such. ;)

@SteelSentry: Well, US Mint is good, but I was asking for other options for evenly distributed coins outside of a country's mint on both sides so that I can get an even flip. If anyone has any suggestions for any, I come from the USA, so I'd like some alternatives just in case. Sorry Sentry, but I like some alts too you know... :)

Anymore ideas for coins? I'm planning to make a third EDH deck soon...

& cdkime, do the chessex dice have curves for corners? Just wondering...

Oh, that's something I've been wondering. Do square corners, you know, mess with the odds at all? I've been using those special dice (used for PW loyalty counters), and how it rolled made me think about it.

BMHKain - they are slightly beveled on the edges and corners

Phaetion - the odds are going to be 1 in 6, regardless of the edge type. That said, beveled dice tend to roll a bit better.

Very well. I just need an example of an equally distributed coin that is not World Mint based though. Any suggestions? Couldn't find one via Google... X/

You already have an example--your Pokemon coin. Considering Wizards of the Coast publishes the Pokemon Trading Card game and has deemed those coins per se "fair and impartial", I am sure it meets their standards for equally distributed.

Even in things as DCI Sanctioned things, & even GPs? Oh, & One last thing, I might be updating the Superfriends deck of mine in the future upon release of Core '19. I'll mention some things in an alternate forum post.

Rule 705.3 pretty clearly lays out what you need:

  1. A two-sided object--it meets that criteria.

  2. Easily distinguished sides--it meets that criteria.

  3. Equal likelihood that either side lands face up--it meets that criteria.

  4. It has an obvious heads (the side with the Pokemon head on it). Even in the alternative, it's super easy to designate that side as heads, and there's little chance opponents will protest its use. You could always bring a quarter as a backup, should you get a purposefully difficult opponent.

If anyone complains, you could always keep the text of Rule 705.3 on your phone.

Very well. I got other things to do now though, so development for Okaun, Eye of Chaos // Zndrsplt, Eye of Wisdom will have to be delayed for some time... Will be made though, I hope... For now, My Jodah deck is taking a differing direction. We'll see what happens... Thanks again. Dunno how I owe for this... X/

cdkime: But were this for a game of EDH, would that rule still apply?

June 18, 2018 2:57 p.m.

Phaetion

The rule is applicable in EDH as well. Rule 903.1 says:

In the Commander variant, each deck is led by a legendary creature designated as that deck’s commander. The Commander variant was created and popularized by fans; an independent rules committee maintains additional resources at MTGCommander.net. The Commander variant uses all the normal rules for a Magic game, with the following additions. (emphasis added).

None of the following rules in the Comprehensive Rules conflict with the dice rule, and I am not aware of a MTGCommander.net rule that would modify the dice rule, nor can I fathom such an unnecessary rule change existing.
