If you're just playing with your friends, and everybody's okay with Crusade, I don't see any real issue with it.

Without throwing this can of worms all over the table again, as long as you and everybody is respectful to each other and those around you, in and out of game, and you follow the official banlist when appropriate, everything should be good. As a measure of preemptive respect and banlist considerations, it would probably be a good idea to have a card like Divine Sacrament or Honor of the Pure on hand.

The card isn’t banned because of its power level, but because of the racist message it conveys.

Whether or not your local playgroup finds this acceptable is entirely up to them. I would suggest to be cautious about bringing such a card to any events where it’ll inevitably end up offending someone.

Its also worth noting that there are other cards available with the same mechanical effects, as well as just better options to run in general - so choosing to play this particular card in spite of those facts could very-easily be seen as trying to push an agenda.

wallisface, i know its banned for "racial" things. but i dont get how its racist, its a crusade that you know refers to an age in history and something in it. and the orginal art had a knight with a cross on his armor, which i dont get how it offends others as its just a crusader, or a knight. poeple are allowed their opoions, i just want to know poeples stand point on it

ET_ASH1228 that’s a “can of worms”, which i really don’t think is going to be a worthwhile conversation/debate.

The crusades have a pretty heavily-racist connotation, for good reason, which you can freely google and get background on in your own time.

You’re allowed to disagree with peoples assessments of the card, but that doesn’t mean the card isn’t still offensive to wide swaths of the community.

I would suggest using this as a learning exercise, and better your knowledge in this space, rather than the current path you’re heading down.

This is a topic that very, very easily can go downhill, and TappedOut has taken the position of supporting Wizards’ decision.

Simply put, Crusade was a card which often showed up in decks explicitly designed to be racist - often accompanied by racial slurs and other cards from that future banlist. TappedOut actually has had a number of those decks on it historically, and, while I think most of them were found and removed, it was bad enough that folks who have been here long enough will recognise why Wizards was concerned about this card.

Further, the specific usage of Christian crusader imagery in the card art made it difficult for Wizards to distance themselves from the racial use of the card. That imagery appeals to a certain unsavoury segment of their population while also invokes feelings of unwelcomeness in others.

Wizards has decided to exercise their free speech rights and ban a card that (a) they know was being used by racists, (2) that contains imagery which racists rally around, and (3) which has historical connotations that can be unpleasant to those whose cultures the crusades sought to eliminate.

With Wizards and TappedOut both being clear on this point, and with the totality of prior threads devolving into intolerance, there is no room for further discussion and this thread will be closed.
