Am I an Old Fogey on here?

I just realized I've had my account on here for 7 years! That's an eternity in terms of the internet. And its probably the longest I've had one user name on one platform. But I guess I'll end this ramble with a thank you first off to yeago and the mods/admins that keep things running around here. And secondly to all the users who have helped me craft decks or just chatting about non sense. Hope y'all have a good day!

Woo congrats! You've got my 5 years beat.

I’ve been here for 8 years, took a few breaks from Magic but always come back to TappedOut when I get back into Magic. Great community here. I’ve tried other deck building sites but none of them come close to this one.

They either don’t have comments, or no descriptions. I like to add character to my descriptions to fit the theme of the deck. Can’t do that anywhere else that I’m aware of.

I’ve kept the same username as well just removed a few numbers off the end of it.

Even if you were 30 when MtG started, you'd be about 58 now, which is still quite young to be put in a nursing home nowadays ;-)

5 years for me, btw

Ok first off, I'm seriously not trying to be a jerk here but I feel it's a legit point and hopefully by pointing it out I may influence others to help more instead of just seeking help.

This is my one and only problem with this "community"... everyone here wants help but 95% of people's activity on this site is selfish and is only for personal gain. A community gives and receives help!

shadow63 - 27 good card suggestions in 8 years...

abby315 - 209 in 5 years...

Hardhitta7 - 106 in 8 years...

Dromar39 - 104 in 10 years...

Grubbernaut - 3 in 10 years...

Profet93 - 801 in 11 years... (by far the most out of this group... congrats)

plakjekaas - 1 in 5 years...

rockleemyhero - 38 in 11 years...

Those are some sad numbers my friends! How about instead of being proud of how long you've been on the site mooching other people's help... you show some pride in helping others. 1558 in 4 years here, which is more than ALL of you combined!

I appreciate the compliment. I think everyone uses the site for different reasons. I first used it to playtest decks without spend $ on them. Very helpful, interesting community too. I like to comment on other people's decks that have the same commander or similar style to discuss strategy. I think the fact that my # is high (relative in this group) is simply because that's what I enjoy doing.

Others may not be so inclined and personally, I think that's okay. I commented how long I've been on the site simply because I was curious how I stacked compared to others, trying to get an average, this stuff intrigues me. While I think it's great that we should comment/suggest cards, don't get me wrong, I find that to be an issue in tappedout, having to cycle over and over again in an attempt to be seen by someone who cares, I dont consider anyone obligated to comment on my decks or others. I also took a long hiatus from MTG when my friends stopped playing, others might be in comparable situations. I do understand the point you're making though, if we can, we should try to help others.

Hardhitta7 says... #12

Personally I leave suggestions on very few decks because I really only play one archetype, Izzet Spells/Prowess and those are the only decks I feel qualified to critique. Plus i don’t really check the suggest box anymore. It annoys me on my own decks having to decline suggestions and adding the ones I do like to my maybe board. So I don’t do it to others. I just leave my suggestions in the comment box.

I also mainly use the site for trading and the forums and I’ve only been active for 3-4 years out of 8.

And why are you worried enough about how others use the site to go checking everyone’s profile?

If you like leaving suggestions that’s cool but don’t assume others like to/feel qualified to do the same.

May 17, 2021 4:06 p.m.

Hardhitta7 says... #13

And I would appreciate not to be called mooch. Why resort to name calling anyways?

May 17, 2021 4:08 p.m.

Last_Laugh says... #14

Hardhitta7 I started with the fact that I wasn't trying to be a jerk. Also stating someone is mooching doesn't mean that I think you ARE a mooch but rather that I felt you were mooching in this particular instance given the clear context. I said my bit and if the shoe fits, wear it... otherwise move on.

abby315 says... #15

Last_Laugh Hey there! I don't use the "suggest a card" feature because when people do it on my decks, it annoys me that I either have to reject the card (even if I like it) or accept it and then take it out of my maybeboard (which I mostly don't use). I make plenty of suggestions by comment box and I know many others do, too. Thanks.

May 17, 2021 4:18 p.m.

Grubbernaut says... #16

Look at the comments I leave, my guy.

They're almost all card suggestions.

Not a good look to be griping in a thread dedicated to this topic. Don't appreciate it.

May 17, 2021 4:24 p.m.

Hardhitta7 says... #17

Just because you say you aren’t trying to be a jerk doesn’t mean you won’t come across as such. It’s like saying “no offense but...” .

I think you’re just trying to start arguments so I’m just gonna move on. Peace.

May 17, 2021 4:25 p.m.

Last_Laugh says... #18

That came from a good place because I'd like to see this community step up their game... that's it, no animosity and no ulterior motives.

You are all long time users of this site and it felt like a good place to bring this up but so far you guys take constructive criticism as well as I take a dick (aka not at all). I'm out guys... reflect on the message, not your feelings.

May 17, 2021 4:40 p.m.

Grubbernaut says... #19

Thanks! I'll continue leaving tons of card suggestions and upvotes, as I have been.

May 17, 2021 4:46 p.m.

Profet93 says... #20

I mean, I thought I was respectful in my comment but to each their own I suppose. Can't change how people perceive things. It's hard to offer other viewpoints without other's getting offended. Shrugs

Caerwyn says... #21

I feel like quite the baby with my 4 years, y'all keep doing you and being an important part of what makes TappedOut great.

Last_Laugh - I'll also note, that if you have to start a post with "I'm seriously not trying to be a jerk here but . . ." maybe re-evaluate the post? Lewd language and nonsensical criticism (your very point was kind of dumb, seeing as there are countless ways folks contribute other than card suggestions) is generally not the best way to promote a healthy internet community!

May 17, 2021 4:57 p.m. Edited.

Last_Laugh says... #22

Caerwyn - I've never had any issue with you but you decided to be a real pos by making this 100% personal. Lewd language aside my point was not dumb or nonsensical in the least. Am I abrasive? Yeah. Does my tough love come from a good place? Sure does. Can anyone on this site accept criticism without ganging up on the person who offered criticism in the first place? Apparently not.

Your focus on everything before 'but' when everything that followed in that paragraph explains I just want altruistic improvements that would benefit everyone is willfully ignorant. Your inflammatory insults that follow me explaining I was coming from a good place just make you look like trash my man.

May 17, 2021 5:49 p.m.

Grubbernaut says... #23

No, you flamed a thread for nostalgia with baseless criticism while saying "why don't you do what I do?"

Turns out people don't like being wrongfully accused of things, especially when they're completely off topic and public.

May 17, 2021 5:56 p.m.

Last_Laugh says... #24

Of course it's public. Why would I try to teach the same lesson more than once? Why do you think Drill Sergeant's yell? Yeah, so anyone in hearing distance learns the same lesson.

I know you all feel like this is a great community... and it is in a lot of ways. HOWEVER... next time you're at you local game store, see how many people avoid this site due to lack of people who EVER post any help, suggestions, or ANYTHING on any of their decks. I know of at least a dozen at my LGS and I literally asked ONCE if anyone used the site and that unanimously was the reason they don't. Seriously, try it.

May 17, 2021 6:10 p.m.

Caerwyn says... #25

I would respond but I do not think it is fair to the OP to devolve their thread any further--especially since their "Recent Posts" are dominated by comments on threads where they are offering advice.

This is a fun little topic, and it's fascinating to see how long some of the users have been here, and give them credit for the long-standing contributions many of them made to this site.

If you do wish to continue this non sequitur, my wall and my DMs are always available.

Yeah it is a great community. I became friends with several people on here years ago, I took a few years break and they are no longer active.

I assume they’ll be back, because no one really “quits” Magic right? You’ll always come back later.

The people are generally very nice and helpful here. It’s nice to have a deckbuilder/forum/trade post all on the same site. Though not many people left trading here anymore.

I also prefer the smaller community here, doesn’t attract as many trolls. And the mods and yeaGO are helpful.

I gave up on internet validation by numbers years ago. I don't use this site to get help on my decks, most of my decks aren't even deckcycled. Originally I just came here to register my lists before I'd rebuild my decks in other ways, and wanted to backtrack when it didn't work out. Then I got into commander, and started building the decks online before buying the cards in paper. When my playgroup wanted to experiment with cEDH, I had to spice up a few decks, so again, registered the original lists before diluting them with fast mana and good answers.

Along the way, I boredly started scrolling forums, and got involved in the topics that sparked my interest. Nowadays I keep up daily, and respond where I feel my insights contribute. I guess it's hard to quantify how much I'm contributing to the community that way, and doesn't show well in statistics, but it does not feel right to be called out as a selfish community leech for that, even if you don't want to be a jerk about it. Though I have to say, Last_Laugh , with a slightly taunting nickname like that, it is tantalizingly hard to resist a reply to your claims, if only to have the last laugh myself :-P

Hardhitta7 says... #30

I always build my decks here first and wait a month or two before I build them because I lose interest very quickly for some.

I used to try get get as many Upvotes as possible by using the feature queue and all that. Now a days I just deck cycle whatever deck I’m building at the moment in the hopes of getting a few comments of cards I missed when building.

I do use the forum a lot more these days. I had a nice chat about hip-hop music the other day with shadow63. If you like to talk hip-hop/rap add me as a friend and we can recommend albums!

Hey Last_Laugh I can't say your 100% wrong but you went about saying it the wrong way. But I honestly forgot about the ability to suggest cards I just post them in the comments. And all my decks are out of date on here and I haven't used a cycle in months. I come on here for the forums at this point and offer advice ever now and then.

Is it worth it to start a thread on how and why people here contribute, and what they expect out of this site? Or would that be too much of an invitation for personal argument?

(I've been here for five years, by the way, but with frequent breaks.)

May 17, 2021 9:38 p.m.

shadow63 says... #34

Could be an interesting topic but it could easily become derailed.

May 17, 2021 9:45 p.m.

wallisface says... #35

legendofa it could be an interesting case study, to see what people enjoy about this site. I think you'd want to word it in a way where you're asking just that though - i.e. if you start delving into questions of what people expect of others, it's going to get messy, as already evidenced here.

It would certainly be a very hard thread to prevent squabbling, I'm not sure how you'd maximize value from the conversation while minimizing nonsense. I think try it and see - I'm certainly interested in seeing how others use the site & optimize their enjoyment on it.

I think every person's experience on the site is different. And for different reasons.

One of my rl sisters uses this site to keep track of her decklists. She likes the site features and what she can do with the inventory features. She has 0 interest in forums as far as I can tell but she enjoys the site and visits it often. I don't think she has ever offered any kind of advice on here. But that does not mean she's not a user of the site or not part of the community. She's just not that interactive or that confident in her game knowledge.

I guess I've been lurking about here for 8 years now XD

I honestly don't understand how the card suggestion function behaves. Do I click or unclick the boxes to leave suggestions? I'm sure I've left or not left suggestions unintended before. Either way, it really doesn't matter to me. And sorry if I've cluttered anyone's decklists!

I'm mostly here to offer advice and perspective, and hopefully gain some in return. Each person here has their strengths and weaknesses as a player, deckbuilder, etc. That's what community is for, if you want to take advantage of it. If there's anything I've learned, it's this group is well thought, open-minded, not afraid of discussion, but they're also not afraid to say something if you do something upsetting and will patiently explain to you why. Very few over the years are openly hostile. So kudos to this community for that.

Whoa, am I old??? Going on 9 years here. Sheesh. now a days, I spend my time lurking. I don't play much in person. There was a bunch of regulars I used to jam with here in the REALLY REALLY long BS threads back in 2015. Those were fun... I just realized I really don't go on here much. Well... I quit drinking. One day I just stopped. Took up Muay Thai. Taught myself how to speak Icelandic during Covid lockdown. Finally got a Bachelors, so I suppose I can stop saying I am a HS dropout, lol. Started building a car, because why not? I bought a house, did the down payment thing thanks to MTG. I retire in about 3.5 years, by the age of 38. All in all things are pretty awesome. What is everyone else doing? You ladies and gents good? Whats the skinny?

I still play, just on Arena and MTGO (for modern) same username as here, if y'all want to find me.
