As you browse and comment on other people's decks you'll see a button with an upward pointing arrow next to the word 'score'. If you click on it it adds one to the decks rating, i.e how many people like the deck. The average points on a player's homepage is the average of all of these across their decks. (I'm not sure if it contributes to t.o ranking though)

not sure i get it lol. i only have two decks, one has a "score" of 4 the other 1, (score me up pls!) but i have 49 points?

Dr. McMeen says... #5

Points are derived via an arcane formula developed in 1467 by a trio of blind Hungarian monks. The Eyeless Ones (as they were known) had discovered through years of meditation that an objective, quantitative measurement of one's prowess was needed- thus, they embarked on their quest to create the perfect "Pont Rendszer," or Point System.

After nearly forty years, the Eyeless Ones had finally devised a method of extracting cranial fluid from female doves that had been caged in the same room as the individual whose prowess was to be measured, which was then boiled and poured over a 1 meter cube of ice brought down from the mountains. The resultant cracks and holes in the ice were rapidly counted as the monks ran their hands over the cube. This number is the number of points that the individual received.

I'm not sure exactly if or how this process has been modified, as the monks passed it on only to a select few, but I do know that it is the basis for Tappedout's point scale. Hope that helps.

so...basically your saying its a measure of my pure awesomeness, in a concentrated form, that was extracted from that dove's brain that i was hangin out with? i wonder if had i been poorly shaped or disformed in any way, would i have been discarded? i wondered why that bird followed me so much. Can i do anything with my awesomeness points, other than show im awesome lol?

p.s. this might be the funniest story i ever read, your sense of humor is EXACTLY like mine...i do stuff like that to my friends all the time!

i agree..nammertime...you speak the truth...i been agreein with you all day lol. give him +1/+1 instead..he earned it for that story. at least my dumb questions end up giving some humor to the community lmao

August 4, 2010 3:53 p.m.

Actually, you can rate comments - by clicking on the small, bleeding heart of the dove between the comment's number and the name of the poster. Unfortunately, giving props this way also pushes the comment to the top of the thread, which sorta screws up the discussion.

That understood, Doc's story is a riot and I don't care if it messes with the order of the full bloomin' universe, he deserves kudos for it. :P

I'm leaving for college in about 7 hours and finishing up my packing. The problem is that I'm not entirely sure what to take from my MTG collection. Since I'm 10 hours away from home and without a car, I can't make frequent trips back if I want to collect something and take it back. My parents are getting on me about the relatively small space I'll have in the dorms, so I can't take too much.

I'm obviously taking my trade binder, along with my Standard MGD and mono-blue control decks. The rest of my decks are purely casual and don't get much use, so I'm bringing my beloved Slivers deck as well. But the big question is whether I want to bring my Theros commons and uncommons.

I experiment in Standard quite a bit, but I know how people are griping about how weak Theros is. All the C/U take up most of a fat pack box, and doesn't leave space for the three decks I want to take.

So should I bring the Theros cards and put the decks in another box, or leave the Theros stuff and put the decks in one box?

Also, should I bother to take 20 or so basic lands of each type?

August 22, 2014 11:26 a.m.

MindAblaze says... #14

Leave the Theros commons behind. There will be a card shop close enough by, where you can pick up whatever commons you need for less than a couple dollars total.

Khans is going to come out in less than 2 months and you'll have all those new toys to play with and make space for.

Don't bring the land either, just buy a fatpack of Khans and you'll be able to use the land that comes with that.

JRaynor says... #16

I agree with MindAblaze!, though I can see bringing 20 of each land if you change around your decks often enough. My guess is you won't miss them even if you buy a fat pack and end up with too much and need to leave some at the LGS.

I have actually gotten rid of my entire magic collection minus my decks and cards I was interested in using: Brain storm or Doom Blade for example are cards that aren't currently in my decks but I kept around. It amounts to less than 1 fat pack box and has served me very well. Anytime I want a specific card that I don't have I can usually buy it online or in a local store or trade for it. It's not the most convenient but I value my space over convenience and you will too if you're living in a dorm.

August 22, 2014 12:37 p.m.

MindAblaze says... #17

That's what I'd do at least. It depends on how much time and disposal income you have. Also on whether there is a card shop within walking/transit distance.

August 22, 2014 12:38 p.m.

Holy shit I was contemplating the same thing about a week ago when I left.

I don't get to play as often as I'd like, as only one of my friends plays Magic. We always get some of the new set over breaks when everyone is home, but that's about all of the cards we buy.

I didn't want to bring my binder (while I'm living in a really safe dorm, it is worth quite a bit and I don't want to risk losing it (not that people would see value in paper, they'd just go for my monitor/laptop)). Thankfully my parents agreed to ship my ends out for me as long as I didn't abuse this offer.

I ended up bringing my playable EDH deck, and two standard decks. I'm in Baltimore but too far from any local store to play consistently and trade, so I just brought a few decks.

GoldGhost012 says... #19

There is a store in town, but not another one within 100 miles. There is also a Wal-Mart easily accessible too, so I don't think I have to worry too much about isolation when it comes to obtaining cards.

GoldGhost012 as a freshmen last year at college, not knowing what to expect i brought 3 decks. 1 of my competitive modern ones, the rest were casual, i taught my roommate how to play and he got interested in it, we played couple times a week, sadly the LGS where i go is only standard...which i dont play and could never see myself playing. but take no more than 3 decks, and not that many singles i made the mistake of bringing alot of singles up there and it was just a issue sometimes. best of luck

Join at least one student group, especially if there's one for your major. You'll enjoy your time more, and if you hang out with people in your major you'll enjoy that more too (or realize you hate it faster and switch).

Have snacks in your room to give to people. You can make friends by bribing them with food. I once got sex out of a mug of tea and some chocolate raisins. Great night that was.

I had room for a personal bar and my collection and my desktop rig. Then again, I could fit multiple freshie rooms in mine...

Yeah, just take the essentials. C/U are nice to have, but if you're pressed for space, they're not essential. You can also just grab them later or order what you need.

I strongly encourage you to check whether there's a Magic club at your campus. I had one at mine, and it was a nice way to break from the same old LGS crowd and get some more casual games in. We also had a mailing list where people could put out requests for C/U and others would provide if they felt like it.

August 22, 2014 3:42 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #33

There is at least a store with Standard and (I think) Modern FNMs. There is no Magic club, but there is a catch-all Game Club. I have also seen other incoming freshies interested in playing.
