I haven't found any good online mtg game sites but this site is fun, to make decks see what type of decks other people have made.

MTGO is the most "official" way to play online, but participation requires buying digital cards. Some cheaper alternatives I know are XMage and Cockatrice. Wizards is also working on a new program called Arena that seems designed to compete with Hearthstone.

In the past, I've used the playtest tool on this site and just skyped with friends using it.

Commenting for future reference. I used cockatrice in the past and I thought it was pretty bad. There's an app mana source on android that's not bad for mobile. Not sure if it's out for I phone

LackeyCCG is a free program on which you can play MtG, Pokemen, I think they're even still playing Vampire/Jyhad, Star Wars and Rage on it, plus it allows you to make your own custom card game, if you're into that.

I haven't used it in years, but when I did, I really liked it. If you pick it up, let me know, maybe we can play. =)

lolman247lolman,
I'm a fan of MTGO ... I've played on Cockatrice and XMage too and the average quality of play on MTGO is much higher. Having to buy digital cards (in addition to paper cards) is a bummer, but it's worth it IMO.

And though it's certainly possible to spend gigabucks on MTGO, it's easy to play a LOT for just a little bit of money: There are free 'Just Starting' and 'Tournament Practice' rooms that always have a bunch of folks available for pick-up games. Pauper is very popular online and of course super-inexpensive. There's also an online format called Momir ... you basically buy a Momir deck and then can play any creature ever printed in Magic ... randomly :-)

Arena is coming soon too. It's in Beta now, and very impressive. Folks will have to grind to get cards, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
