Community Set: Challenge Gone Awry

Hello, Community.

While we finish the final quirks to this madness of an expedition, I have a spoiler (that means it's official). Just a little something to peak your interest.

Photobucket

Now, on to the challenge. Since one of the most liked ideas was the Negashards idea, we'll be starting off with that.

From shards of Alara, each shard has its 3 cost card that costs one of each color mana from that shard. Naya has Woolly Thoctar , Jund has Sprouting Thrinax , Grixis has Sedraxis Specter , Bant has Rhox War Monk and Esper has Windwright Mage . Now the challenge, is to make our own.

The 5 "Negashards" are:

Kilgar- RWU. The main themes here will be ambush and control. The use of the keyword "Revenge" would fit nicely, but isn't necessary. There definitely needs to be a combat trick, whatever that means to you.

Avora- UGB. Think Simic meets Golgari. Acceptable keywords would be "Poisonous", "Wither", or the newly coined "Infection" keyword.

Irindu- RGU. Definitely combo-player territory. The use of our "Flow" can get a bunch of cards out fast.

Sorok- WRB. Bringing back Bushido. "Precision" would be good here. Just think Samurai.

Oturu- WGB. "Render" and "Convoke" can work together to start getting out fatties fast, but at the cost of your life. Swarm players are in heaven here. Life gain and tokens.

the cards you create can be anything except a land. All other card-types are fair game.

Card grading is based on: Leveled-ness. (Cannot be overpowered) Originality. Falls under guildines.

Guidelines Each card you submit must have one color mana from that shard, with a CMC of 3.

For each card, stay within the realm of what each shard does. If you have an idea we didn't, feel free to put it in. Maybe we'll like it.

Treat this as you would any other challenge. Submit one card idea per comment, and tell us which shard it's for.

All cards due at the end of next Sunday. Enjoy.

And just as a review of all the keywords mention:

Convoke (Each creature you tap while casting this spell reduces its cost by or by one mana of that creature's color.)

Poisonous (Whenever it deals combat damage to a player, that player gets three poison counters. A player with ten or more poison counters loses the game.)

Wither (It deals damage to creatures in the form of -1/-1 counters.)

Flow (cost): (When you draw this card you may reveal it. If you do, you may cast it for its flow cost.)

Render: (Each life you pay while casting this spell reduces its cost by 1.)

Revenge X (At the end step of each turn, is this creature was in combat this turn, it deals X damage to the creature/s it was in combat with.)

Infection X (Whenever this creature deals damage to another creature, put X infection counters on that creature, which X is how much damage that creature was dealt. At the beginning of that creature's controller's turn, remove one infection counter from that creature. When all counters are removed, exile that creature and put an X/X zombie creature token into play under target opponent's control.)

Precision (Damage dealt by this cannot be prevented.)

Have fun with it!

Perhaps we can reach a compromise: Infection will put on Infection counters. That's it.

And then infection counters disappear one at a time, and once they're gone, your opponent gets control of that creature.

this way, there can we some cards that have infection 2 or 3 for 3cmc that are 5/5's and what not.

Good grief Render is hard to balance >_<

Render cannot really be used for this challenge, given the criteria of CMC 3 and one of each color.

Expect to be seeing lots of Render later, though.

this seems pretty open ended - what position in the set are these cards supposed to take? are they supposed to be, say, a cycle of uncommons, each with a CMC of 3 in their negashard colours, which exemplify the theme of that shard? are these supposed to be good cards, or good examples? and do they all have to be the same card type, even though that card type can be anything aside from land?

TAMA says... #15

Thankyou Matt for asking a good question. This challenge is far to open to be an opening challenge. We need to have a set storyline, card cycles and keywords before we should even start having card competitions.

You all have wonderful ideas but we need a universal vision before we can start making a set. Infection and Flow are still in need of severe editing and then they need to be approved by tappout as a community before we can start sticking them on cards.

Xander574 says... #16

yah i'm really surprised there wasn't a vote on key words. Liek you guys pick the top ten and then us as a community would vote on which 2-5 we would use.

Also if we a re doing the negashard idea we should have a story line pitch thread or at least get down what is going on in each nega-shard. Is avora filled with snakes, bugs, and frog creatures or zombies. Is Kilgar filled with goblins or humans?

I feel like we've jumped the shark. Building a set is an already difficult process when its a definitive team building it. Here we have it being done communally which is great but should be done slowly.

I think we should void this article and go back several steps in the set creation process. Ideas can be reposted in an appropriate article in which they fit.

Ok everybody. I think this has gotten a bit crazy. I have a suggestion for those running this. I suggest that we all calm ourselves and reboot. Simple enough. Clearly people want to participate, but we need to start back at the basics.

  1. we are doing negashards great
  2. We have no real story line but we have keywords, bad idea

Lets start back at making a story for this and clarifying whether this is a planned cycle and the set size etc. These seemingly boring details will help with the rest of this. Look at how landfall plays into Zendikar story. Important.

I say that we litterally delete the current threads and start over. It really needs it.

+1 this comment if you agree

+1 for Squire. We've gone a bit nuts with keywords. I'm sure I'm not the first person to think Infection is far too wordy/has too many variations to be keyworded.

That being said, we have no idea if starting with story is the best idea, there's every chance it will result in another one of these articles. Also, what happens to the ideas people have put up here? Will Darkness keep them tucked away or should we all be reaching for pens and paper?

ive looked online and the general consensus seems to be no. But is there a card builder for mac.Or a sight that does it for you.or a link to templates for each color card.

May 11, 2010 1:55 p.m.

I think a lot of what people are saying here makes sense. A reboot of this might make some sense. We do seem to have WAY too many key words here. typically an expansion only deals with around 3 or so. Also there don't seem to be good definitions for what the different key words actually mean. For instance a flow ability is that a separate casting cost that you can pay when you draw the card that is cheaper? Is it an ability that you must activate when you draw the card? Is it an ability you can only activate if you play the card as you draw it and the card itself. Is it both an alternate casting cost in some instances and an ability in others? (is it sufficiently different from a kicker?)

Goodness knows we have tons of different ideas on what the heck infection is no 2 of which are even close to being the same.

Render doesn't make a lot of sense in this challenge as I would envision it going much better with cards that have some colorless mana component to them which could be paid with the render ability. Or it would make sense if render wasn't necessarily a reduction in mana cost but a way to activate an ability on a creature. Like Render3 draw 2 cards = Pay 3 life to draw 2 cards. So creature abilities not mana decreasers...

But there are a whole host of abilities here, and no focus really on how they are used.

I also agree that some great ideas for cards have been posted, and we should probably not loose the ideas, but lets stop the process in its tracks and consider laying out more of the ground work.

May 11, 2010 3:19 p.m.

My suggestions:

Negashards is the name of our block. lets stick with that and expand on it. So maybe we make 3 sets Negashards, Influx, and Alara Negated. Or some other snappy names. Typically the first set is large so Negashards the first set in our block out to be large, with influx smaller as second sets typically are, and then the third set can be either a small or large set.... i am going to suggest large for the sake of our community haveing lots of creative opportunity.

Then we need a story, just by way of example- something like a negashard exhibitionary force discovers alara and a fight breaks out on alara, influx - the invasion of negashard by alara and its defense, and finally Alara Negated could be the securing of the negashard home world. Just a suggestion.

Then we need to figure out what new mechanic or ability will be featured in each of these sets, and which abilities will be over arching the entire block. In order to do that however we need a much tighter definition of what these key words or abilities are / do and how they work, and when they can be used.

Xander574 says... #27

i vote no on alara related stuff (though i do like the nega shards, and the name influx.) As set sizes go a Large small Medium layout sounds good.(personally in my head im running with The nega shards are established in the first set. The second set has something happen that starts to combine the shards. And the third one deals with the world as one big plane. (maybe going from 50 percent gold to zero percent gold) showing how each of the tribes/shards change and function in this new plane.)

May 11, 2010 6:07 p.m.

Xander574 says... #28

also one of the enemy color legendary dragons should be a planes walker in the second set
