Drinkchase the Planing Game

So a friend of mine is turning 21 soon and I thought I'd look up some existing MTG drinking games and we might play one of those... Well, long story short, I didn't quite find what I wanted, but I found some really great ideas, spread across a dozen different games or so.

Obviously if I just stuck all those together and played them my friend wouldn't have any more birthdays to come, so I thought I'd try to mix and match and of course, combine them with the ever fun Planechase game (Because doing it to Chaos MTG would just be insane.)

And here's what I came up with. Feel free to use it, suggest things, or whatever. I'd love some feedback on it.

Planechase, but with drinking rules. Whenever we planechase, we also Drinkchase. You may Drinkchase at any time as a Sorcery by taking 3 drinks.

Note: This assumes relatively low ABV drinks topping out around 7 or 8%. Do not try without a healthy liver if you are using higher ABV drinks.

(1) Roll twice on the Phenomendrunk table, putting both on the stack.

(2) All creatures gain Inebriating. Whenever they would deal damage to a player, that player may take a drink. If they do, prevent that damage.

(3) Whenever a player casts a Sorcery or Instant they may take a drink. If they do, they may copy that spell. Whenever a Non-land, non-token permanent enters the battlefield, its controller may take a drink. If they do, they may put a copy of that permanent onto the battlefield.

(4) At the beginning of each player's upkeep, they must sacrifice 3 creatures or take 3 drinks, or any combination thereof. If they have no creatures, they must take 1 drink instead.

(5) Creatures cannot attack unless their controller takes 1 drink for each attacking creature.

(6) For each 3rd land tapped by a single player in a turn that player may take a drink. If they do, they may add 2 mana of any color(s) to their mana pool.

(7) At the beginning of each player's upkeep, all other players may take a drink. If they do, they may untap up to 2 permanents.

(8) Until we Drinkchase, players may not take drinks to attempt to Drinkchase. Planechasing still causes us to Drinkchase. At the beginning of each player's upkeep, they roll the Planar Die. On a Planechase, they roll 3 times for a new Drinkchase and choose the one they wish to Drinkchase to. On a Chaos, the player before them in turn order does so instead. Otherwise, they take 1 drink.

(9) Player's skip their draw step. At the beginning of each player's upkeep, they roll the Planar Die. On a Planechase, they may drink up to 3 drinks and draw a card for each drank drunken. On a Chaos, they take a drink and each other player may draw a card. Otherwise, they may discard a card, if they do, they may draw a card.

(10) At the beginning of each Combat step, the active drinker takes 1 drink or skips the Combat step. If they drink, they roll a Planar Die. On a Planechase, creatures they control gain Horsemanship and Lifelink until end of turn. On a Chaos, all players in turn order may take up to 3 drinks each. All creatures gain +0/X, Reach, and Horsemanship until end of turn. Where X is the number of dranks drunken. Otherwise, combat proceeds as normal.

(11) At the beginning of each player's upkeep, they reveal the top card of their library. They may take a drink. If they do, they may cast the card or put it onto the battlefield. Otherwise, the card is put into their graveyard.

(12) Until the next time we Planechase, player's must take 1 drink for each attempt to planechase after the first on their turn.

(13) Whenever a creature enters the battlefield, its controller may take 1 drink. If they do, it gains Haste and Inebriating until end of turn.

(14) At the beginning of each player's upkeep, they may exchange their drink with another player and then take a drink.

(15) Each non-token creature in play gains "Drink X: Regenerate this creature. X is equal to the creature's CMC."

(16) At the end of each turn, each player that gained 5 or more life may have target player take 1 drink. Each player that lost 5 or more life must take 1 drink.

(17) Each player may take the following action, once per turn, as a sorcery. Take 2 drinks and choose one: Destroy target permanent, Exile target land, Lose 3 life and target creature gains Indestructible, Vigilance, and Lifelink until your next turn, or put 5 0/1 goat tokens onto the battlefield and gain 3 life.

(18) Players cannot win the game. Players cannot lose the game. If an effect would cause a player to lose the game, they take 2 drinks. If an effect would cause a player to win the game, each other player takes 2 drinks, and the winner gains 10 life instead.

(19) Roll once on the Phenomendrunk table.

(20) Roll once on the Phenomendrunk table.

[1] All drinks are replaced with Water until the next time we Drinkchase.

[2] When we Drinkchase to this phenomendrunk, each drinker must pour their drink into a single container. Each drink is then redistributed evenly among all drinkers. Soooo Tasty!

[3] When you encounter Mutual Drunkenness, each drinker takes 2 drinks. Then Drinkchase again.

[4] When you encounter EurDrunka!, starting with you, each drinker may put a permanent onto the battlefield, and then take a drink. This continues until at least 2 drinkers choose not to put a permanent onto the battlefield.

[5] When you encounter Spatial Drunkenness, roll until you encounter two Drinkchase cards other than Phenomendrunks. We are now on both of those Drinkchases until we next Drinkchase.

[6] When Drunken Distortion is encountered, make sure each drinker is paying attention. After a count of 3 after this card is read, each drinker must chug their drinks until a single drinker finishes chugging. The drinker that finishes chugging first takes the next turn and play continues to the right or to the left of that drinker, based on their choice.

Yes, I know it may seem like a lot of rules for a bunch of Drunkards. But most of these are things we understand already as MTG players and even with being a tad bit drunk we'll still understand. And if we don't, so what? We'll just make up what it's meant to do and drink.

Now, I kinda wanna think up funny names like EurDrunka! for each of these cards. So if ya have an idea, feel free to share. Also same if ya wanna suggest drinking amount changes, or just changes at all. This assumes drinks are roughly 5-8% ABV at the most. And obviously some of these would be ignored if groups are not okay with them (Namely #2 on the Phenomendrunks. I know some people aren't okay with having to drink other people's drinks after all. It's meant to be like an Ugly Mug if ya know the term)

In fact, I've got an alternate #2 Phenomendrunk for people afraid of cooties actually.

[2] Each drinker pours half of their current drink into a new container, and sets aside the other half. Each other drinker chooses 1 previously agreed upon liquid to be added to that drink. This is done for each drinker in turn order.

Yeah, I was reading over them again, and some of these might be a tad overly strong, hehe.

Any suggestions on making them weaker would be okay. Definitely gonna change Inebriating 1 to something a friend suggested:

"Whenever a creature would deal damage to a player, that player may take a drink. If they do, prevent that damage."

It means that tokens can't just send 30 creatures at someone to make him pretty damn drunk, but it also means that they have to balance damage for drinking at times.

I kinda wanna make the other abilities more in line with that too, so any suggestions along those lines would be much appreciated. Like, I'd rather the effects let the player choose to drink or else they let something generally bad happen. I mean, I still want some that they have to drink, but less of the ones where it's required to drink.

Also, it may be worth mentioning that I am not thinking long swigs for drinking, so much as I'm thinking about a half ounce of liquid roughly (No don't get a measuring cup...). Just a short drink of liquid is all I'm expecting. So, to give an idea, a beer can would consist of around 20 drinks or so, not 10.

Also, I changed some of them, including the sacrificing creatures one, so they should be less deadly. Especially the sacrificing creatures one. It's actually now more advantageous to token decks (Though they get screwed on the one that lets you regenerate creatures)

Also, some of these are a bit wordy for someone who's 5-6 drinks in.

I tried to dewordify them a bit, but there's only so much you can do. At least I don't have Shahrazad levels of text going on here. Though honestly, I think if we're drunk and can't figure out what it does, that's both an indication that we should probably stop soon and also a good chance for us to use our drunken levels of interpretation to do what we think it's meant to do.

Some, like the ones with the planar die are wordy, but really aren't... Because it's just "Okay, we roll the die... It's that blank side, what's that?" Or "Oh, it's the swirly side... That's chaos, right?"

Might be better if I write those out in a way so they look a bit like a Planechase card. Honestly, if I stuck these on Planechase cards they'd probably be a lot less wordy looking actually. I'm gonna go look to see if there's a blank for that already...

TheBoozeCube in Twitter has an entire format that has been play tested out along with a cube that you can print out and use for these purposes.

I've seen the Boozecube, and the main reason I'm not using it is quite simple. I cannot print off that many cards and it also would involve changing decks up entirely instead of just being able to grab existing decks and start drinking.

Now, I really want to use Boozecube eventually, this is just not in the cards for now.
