This is for the brewers only.
As close as you can remember, describe the first deck you built on your own.
Mine was a Pauper GW Hexproof deck that I bought completely off of cardkingdom to use in Paper Pauper tournaments.

My first deck was mono vampire tribal with a lot of life link. I had a play set of Vampire Nighthawk (still one of my all time favorite cards) among other vampires. Malakir Bloodwitch was my best card in the deck and my main win con.
I ran a lot of cards from the Liliana and Garruk duel decks. Bad Moon, Hideous End, Tendrils of Corruption among others. Mutilate was a fun card and I really liked the art work. Pretty sure I was only targeting other people's creatures for that effect and not my own (which I should have done obviously).
Our decks were not the fine tuned 60 card decks either. We would run around 70 in most cases because it just made sense to us to have all the best cards available. Hell, one player in our group had something close to 100 cards in his deck. Play sets of every elf available at the time of Zendikar's release.
Later, when I found out about the singles available at my LGS, I added Terror (another personal fav for artwork) and Pestilence (almost didn't because the white border bothered me lol).
A lot of memories with that deck. Sort of brought it flooding back when they released Edgar Markov. Vampire tribal was the commander I had to run from the new set, obviously.

In the beginning before there was intellect there was dragons. That was the absolute first deck I built, though there are a lot of firsts. This was the first time I played magic
My first deck upon returning to Magic for the first time, I've been in and out a lot, was Sunburst artifacts.
My first Tribal deck was Mono-white soldiers
My first competitive deck was U/B mill
My first win at FNM was with mono black vampires during zendikar.
My first Legacy Deck was Dredge
My first successful homebrew was BUG dark depths, though it did require research to complete it was my design. It also stands as my first and only large event win in the Legacy format.

The first deck I created myself was a 5-color artifact deck. It was awful 90% of the time. The other 10% is when people left me for later, which allowed the deck to build up and smash down with big hunks of junk. It was not a bad concept, just a really awful affinity deck.

My first deck was an 80-card pile of mostly Goblins, but included all the hard hitters that were in my dad's collection, like Shivan Dragon and Ball Lightning, with 4 copies of Firebreathing as my finisher (to enchant my Goblin Balloon Brigade or make someone unblockable with my Goblin Tunneler). I still remember when I came back to Magic and saw Krenko, Mob Boss in the case at my LGS.
My first Commander deck was also a Mono-R Goblins deck, headed by my boy Krenko, and later Grenzo, Havoc Raiser.

I believe it was some god-awful / exalted mess built out of cards from a deck builder's toolkit with things like Duskmantle Prowler, Duty-Bound Dead, Guardians of Akrasa and Aven Squire. It probably had more than 60 cards.

My first deck ever was the UR precon from M2015.
The first deck I ever built was a Black/White lifegain/drain deck... I actually have the list on this site already: you can find it here

White weenie! Back in 2001 or so I ran a 60ish card deck with cards like Icatian Javelineers, Abu Ja'far, White Knight and Glorious Anthem(spent my lunch money on them). It was terrible but we all were back then.

I built a terrible UG Metalcraft deck with Carapace Forger, Copper Carapace, Scrapdiver Serpent, and so forth...my first cards were built from a blind box with Magmaw as the only rare and 50 copies of Sky-Eel School. (After that, I built a UW Auras deck when Sphere of Safety came out.)
But I guess it did inspire a love of the Scars block for me, so I owe that humble little UG deck one.

Boza first deck you BUILT.
Not first deck you PLAYED.
You did not build the one you mentioned. You bought it prebuilt.
What was the first deck you brewed yourself?
These stories are bringing a smile to my face!
Keep 'em coming.
No need to list all your firsts. There will be another topic about that, at a later stage.

First deck I built would have to be my W/G lifegain/populate deck. It was absolutely god awful and had no clear strategy other than populate and also having some cards that give me life gain. I had almost no cards at the time and it was the first mechanic I had ever worked with. My brother eventually found it, and with my permission, gutted it into his first deck, which I'll admit is much stronger than it initially had been.
November 28, 2017 4:27 p.m.
troyisepic my first dedicated mechanic was Heroic.
I still have the deck. It's super fast. I might drag it out for another play.

I can't remember the first deck I ever built. I started playing the game with a precon deck and tweaked it, but that's not building a deck.
The first deck I "brewed" on my own, and felt successful with and proud of, was a fast pace casual Grixis agro deck. The centerpiece was Grixis Grimblade, and the gameplan was essentially to get Fists of the Demigod onto grimblade and swing away at my opponent, using cards like Vapor Snag to pull threats off of the board.

My first build was mono red goblins. I hadnt played in about 10 years. It had your typical goblins list, guides, chieftain, pile driver. It also included alot of strange inclusions like Coat of Arms and Koth of the Hammer. The first tournament i ever played in my life was with this build and i got my ass kicked!!! First match was jeskai control, then i got 2-0d by jund, merfolk, and tron! I quickly junked the goblin deck and started studying and building for the meta and ive been mostly succesful since but i will probably resurrect the goblins and make em competitive sometime in the near feature.

The first deck I ever built on my own without any outside advice from other people was a G/R Pauper Werewolves deck. Wasn't anything too fancy but I did it on my own and was proud of how the deck played and turned out. Brewing is now one of my favorite things to do. Very relaxing and just all around fun!

My first ever brew was a G/B deathtouch deck. I knew I wanted a G/B deck because I liked the physical look of the colors together. The start of the deck came from buying 60 green and 60 black cards off ebay, random lots (yes really, I had no clue what I was doing). You better believe I had those 1/1s for 1 with deathtouch from Sedge Scorpion to Typhoid Rats to Pharika's Chosen. It also had some okay to good cards like Deadly Recluse, Hornet Nest, and Hornet Queen. At one point I actually had Vial of Poison in the deck because I had some creatures without deathtouch. It was awful and I still have it, slightly altered but not for any competitive format. I keep it around for nostalgia now and occasionally break it out for casual games.

Argy, I did build and buy the deck I mentioned. I just had to order every single card since my LGS carried no pauper staples. It existed in some form in online pauper tourneys, but mine was a differently focused one in terms of sideboard and enchantments.
In terms of building completely from the ground up, it was a UW Reality Acid control deck that is still on TO - Budget Acid Trip.

Gearhead93 I hope you had Ruthless Ripper in there, theDeathtouchiest of the Deathtouches.

Mine was a BW ally lifedrain deck that I loved a lot. It ran Drana, Liberator of Malakir, and my favorite card was Kalastria Healer.
I might make it into a modern deck depending on how much time I have while working on my other decks.
This deck usually went 3-1 and 2-2 at tournaments at my LGS. I always loved Grasp of Darkness against Delirium decks (This was AER-AKH standard at the time) and my opponents' faces when they flipped into an Abolisher of Bloodlines and I had two Cliffhaven Vampires and a Zulaport Cutthroat on the field.

Argy That would have been nice but that deck was built around the time of Born of the Gods/M15. Khans unfortunately wasn't out yet.

First deck owned was a Elf deck. Thought Wellwishers were just the best card out there. Then I got Timberwatch Elf
The first deck built by me was a casual clerics deck using the infinite life combo of Daru Spiritualist and zero cost equipment and Starlit Sanctums, built with Rotlung Reanimators and Edgewalkers. I remember flipping out when I found out Transmutation was a card. Still have a playset of Scrubland (purchased at 15$ea) to this day. Why couldn't I have had a U/G, U/R or U/R deck back then.
First competitive deck I built was Mirrodin Standard Affinity.

I just remembered that I also had 4x Awaken the Ancient in mine.
I might have also had Staff of the Flame Magus.
I might actually try to rebuild it on here.

I rebuilt mine, as well as I could remember it.

Great discussion! Love seeing everyone's answers!
The first deck I built was a classic rookie deck.
I had a Red/Green dragon deck that I'd bought from a friend to start me off and My brother had a White/Green Zendikar intro-deck that I'd gotten him. After we decided we wanted Magic, and a lot of it, we bought a couple lots of 1000 cards from ebay(rookie mistake #1) and went to brewing.
Rookie mistake number 2: we thought lifegain was the most powerful, amazing thing ever, so my brother and and went about building an unstoppable 4-color life gain deck!!!!
It was awful.
Chalk full of amazing cards like Predator's Rapport, Pride Guardian, Soulmender, and a single Felidar Sovereign(from the intro pack)! It was a mess to be honest, but a really fun time and a good learning experience. Good times.
The first deck I really, truly brewed, researched, discussed, evolved, bought, and got to a point I was truly happy with was Bad Luck Brion. That's the one I'm proud of haha

My first deck was AMAZINGLY bad. 96 cards, 5 colours, only 3+ drops and 20 lands. Good Times. It actually won a lot, but that was only because my friends and I only had my collection to jam with. The games followed 3 patterns.
1)I die2)I am obliterated3)After fighting past loxodons, act of treason and Topdecking ALOT, i win.
Good Times

The first deck I built was this grixis pile of hot garbage with only singleton cards I bought online because they looked cool. I was lucky to have a turn three play of Kederekt Creeper but otherwise the deck did nothing until around turn 7 because it was full of random things like Thraximundar, Nekusar, the Mindrazer, Sire of Stagnation and Malfegor.

My first deck was a really terrible treefolk tribal deck back in the days of Lorwyn and Morningtide. Unfortunately, I was mostly building with second hand cards at the time and tried to make due with Traproot Kami, Doran, the Siege Tower, and (I think) Wakestone Gargoyle. Eventually I figured out what I was doing and went full on with Bosk Banneret, Dauntless Dourbark, and Leaf-Crowned Elder; although, the process took over a year.
September 12, 2018 1:52 a.m.
Esto713 I've never read anyone saying they had to make DO with a terrific card like Doran, the Siege Tower.
September 21, 2018 2:18 p.m.
It was more in reference to the three card combo rather than the quality of any of them. I love Doran, the Siege Tower!

Mine was Mono and scrounged together from cards I had cracked from packs, and picked out of the singles pile at my local shop.
24 Lands (all Mountains), 24 Creatures, and 12 Non-Creature spells, as per online instructions.
The centrepiece was the first card I ever bought, Stormbreath Dragon. It cost me a grand total of AU$15. About US$20.
It had a good curve, starting with Akroan Crusader, moving into Dragon Hatchling, Young Pyromancer, and Guttersnipe, then finally Chandra, Pyromaster, and a dose of Lava Axe to finish the party.
It also had some copies of Act of Treason, which my friend used to HATE.
It won a few games, despite me missing almost every single trigger!
