Foil peel alters

Hello! So because I am not talented enough to do normal paint alters I have decided to try my hand at foil peel alters! For anyone who doesnt know what a foil peel alter is, it is when you take a foil card (generally land) and then peel off the foil layer of another card, then cut it, then glue it onto the land card, generally over the text box.

Generally I feel the hardest part doing these alters is finding two arts the work well together, for example the art of Frostburn Weird and Izzet Guildgate go together, but say, Battlewise Hoplite and almost any swamp do not work together. Which leads me to my questions:

I really like the artwork on Highland Lake and Forsaken Sanctuary but I cannot think of what art will work well with them, so does anyone have any suggestions?

And secondly, does anyone have any suggestions of what land and other art could look nice together?

Thank you!

Full art Snow-Covered Island. I'd buy those in a heartbeat.

I mean, those are pretty uniform in color. Someone could alter them with acrylics with relative ease. They'd likely be rather cheap for you compared to other full-art alters. The coldsnap printing is a bit harder to work on.

I hadn't seen these peel alters before. They look really cool!

I think they mostly look really trashy. Great ones look ok.

Not only are most trashy but they aren't legal. To help the OP, I've seen the guildgates used with basics to great success.

I agree; some of them are pretty bad. For the most part though, I think that is because the method for producing them is simple enough that people without an eye for form, color, or composition can still produce them. I think that this is reflected by what is mentioned in the OP's second paragraph.

Other than obscuring printed information, what is the legality issue with these?

Thickness. Foil peels aren't legal due to altered thickness.

I figured that was probably your reasoning. The thickness of the foil layer itself wouldn't really be an issue, compared to a regular foil though, would it? Or do they actually make foil cards on thinner cardstock to offset the addition of a second layer (and adhesive)? Without having ever peeled a foil, I can't say for sure, but I would imagine that the thickness of the foil layer is less than a few thousandths, certainly less than you could detect with your hands. I think the new glue layer would be the real contributor to a difference in thickness between a pack foil and a peeled foil alter. Even so, I would imagine that there are lots of hobby glues that will adhere at thicknesses much thinner than you could reasonably detect. Not really trying to argue for allowing these or anything, just really interested in where the line is drawn.

How much do alters cost? I mean, a foil peel should be cheap. But what about full art alters on cheap commons and uncommons?
