I know it's real early to be talking about it, but I am so excited! Simic and Orzhov make their appearance :) I wonder who will be popping up this time around :3
What are you guys wishing for the most out of Gatecrash? Me, I want to see Kiora finally appear. She HAS to! I hope she has some kind of epic ramping powers too :)
UmbrotheUmbreon says... #3
I hope that Simic gets some kind of cool ramp mechanic. Would be nice to see Voidslime get a reprint :)

I'm excited for the return of Boros. Hope they get plenty of love in Gatecrash.

I'm particularly excited for Simic. I will definitely be picking them at the pre-release. The main thing I want to see is Kiora Atua getting a card.
She'd fit with the merfolk.

Yeah I will pick either Simic or Orzhov :) Kiora I have been dying to see since DotP 2012

Orzohov is something I'm looking forward too. Sadly, Isolated Chapel is $10.99 atm. Hopefully it goes down before Gatecrash comes out. lol I don't think Glimpse the Unthinkable will be reprinted since we already have a 2 drop that mills 7 from m13. I forget the name, but I think they created that solely for dimir in Feb. I want to see Angel of Despair come back in some form. I hear that sinker will have the champions though. lol

That card is Mind Sculpt . It succeeded in sculpting it's name from your mind lol

Wow, so I'll be the first to mention Dimir here! I want to see what interesting mechanic they could tap into, and U/B control seems right up my sadistic streak, especially with the potential for a cheap-ass discard deck with Shrieking Affliction in my sights.

Ooh, not quite first to mention. But I still stand; Dimir and Orzhov seem exciting to me. I'd like to hear from a Gruul player next.

I'm excited for Gruul! But mostly to play it in Naya. In also really excited for Boros.
October 15, 2012 8:26 p.m.
I'm looking forward to some sweet Gruul action. I'm hoping for some four-drop four-power Hasteys to replace Hero of Oxid Ridge . Also, a red-producing card:Avacyn's Pilgrim would rock my world.

I think Orzohov is going to be badass. If you look at the previous block, which is what I've done today, they have printed a massive amount of cards for W/B control. I think that curses will be seeing play with this guild, especially Curse of Exhaustion . I'm not sure how it will do without a playable board-wiper. I have no intention of splashing in blue for Supreme Verdict . I'm hoping that they get something even nastier.
Lol @UmbrotheUmbreon. I think you're right on that!
Also does anyone know when the new mechanics will be announced? I know RTR just came out, but my main focus has always been on Orzohov. =)

@Bigburlybill: Haha :D I don't know, but can't wait for SImic and Orzhov's mechanics to be announced :)

The new mechanics are supposed to have decent synergy with the old ones.
As a result, something that compliments Graft and Haunt will no doubt come from their respective guilds.

i don't see why they didn't make a mechanic called Blink for the blink cards like Cloudshift and Ghostly Flicker =/
October 15, 2012 9:19 p.m.
Bigburlybill says... #18
Lol Selesnya is where it's at for blinking. ;D Honestly, I think we have enough ETB creatures to just go ahead and say that there is a blink mechanic. =)
October 15, 2012 9:30 p.m.
@Bigburlybill: How does Orzhov not have playable board wipes? Mutilate and Terminus are in your colors. Plus you have access to all of the best targeted removal while you wait on board wipes. You'll have access to Godless Shrine , so Mutilate will still be good. Plus you'll have access to Liliana of the Dark Realms to tutor shock lands and thin your deck so you'll have better draws, and she can kill stuff. SICK!!!
October 15, 2012 9:46 p.m.
Bigburlybill says... #20
I wasn't finished looking for cards that could be beneficial. I meant board-wipes as in cards like Damnation , Day of Judgement?!?!?!!, or Wrath of God . That 4 drop "destroy all creatures" we've grown to know and love. I see what you're getting at. I think I might need to pick up 3x Liliana of the Dark Realms to have some mana ramp into ultimate control. Thanks for the tips on these certain cards though. I hadn't considered the target removals of black. That type of card in the same deck as white control will make a nice combo. You've helped me today. Now I have until feburary to decide what to do with this. =)
Also, do you guys think we'll see a G/W Planeswalker from this block? I'm thinking it might be Mat'selesnya in sinker, but I'm still unsure. Supposedly, we're supposed to have 3 in Gatecrash and 3 in Sinker.

Kiora and Gideon are most likely 2/3 in Gatecrash

Bigburlybill: It has been confirmed on MaRos tumblr that there are 2 planeswalkers in gatecrash and 1 in sinker. he has also said that they've made it a rule to have a maximum of 5 planeswalkers in a non-core block so there can only be 5 spread out between rtr, gatecrash and sinker

The Dimir mechanic was already spoiled.
Creature deals damage in the form of milling cards from the top of opponents library instead of damage.
Think of it as kinda like the infect mechanic. They kinda hinted at it with Crosstown Courier before someone accidently spoiled it.
October 16, 2012 12:33 a.m.
Evan Erwin speculated that on the Magic Show. But I didn't think he actually spoiled it?
October 16, 2012 12:42 a.m.

Evan Erwin talked about it on the last Magic Show...Go to starcitygames.com and look at the free videos and watch the Return to Ravnica breakout hits video.

DeletedNow4ever says... #28
Listen to what he says...he says that it was spoiled...he said he used to dream about that being a mechanic and now he can't believe it's a real thing. Watch it again and pay more attention. He didn't spoil the name of it, but gave the name HE used to use for it.

You've broke my heart atreyujames. Oh well. If that's the case, then it's safe to assume that the three planeswalkers are Gideon, Kiora, and Ral Za'rek. =(
I like this dimir mechanic. It seems slightly overpowered, but with all of the creatures and control in every other guild, I can see it fitting. card:Rogue's Passage will see more play in gatecrash. ;D

The mill mechanic seems pretty weak. If you're attacking with enough power to mill a significant number of cards, you could have more easily killed the opponent with regular damage. Besides, some decks love graveyard interactions, and you'll just be giving Snapcaster and reanimator decks more fuel.
I want to see the new Gruul mechanic. I'm thinking Jund and Naya aggro could get big if RG gets a powerful combat mechanic, especially since Selesyna players already want to splash red for Bonfire of the Damned .
October 16, 2012 1:21 a.m.
Mat'Selesnya is not a Planeswalker, and her location is actually accounted for in-story: In stasis in the heart of Vitu-Ghazi.
Anyway, as for Gatecrash I am faced with a deep and difficult problem as to whether I want to go Orzhov or Simic. Ont he one hand, I've got a lot of Simic in my Slugs and Science deck and they're great and fun, and on the other I made a Commander deck built around The Baroness Teysa just because I had one in my collection and she's awesome if you've read the novels.
So I dunno man, I just dunno.
October 16, 2012 1:48 a.m.
Bigburlybill says... #35
I dont know Epochalyptik. I think the mechanic is more icing on the cake if anything. From what Ive seen, most of the guilds dont focus specifically on their mechanics. Most are just there to strengthen the already powerful focus of each guild. I might be wrong though. Im thinking that the main focus will be on spells and sorceries. There might also be cards like Visions of Beyond or card:Jace's Phantasm that benefit from having so many cards in the grave.
October 16, 2012 2:03 a.m.
I'm not sure that that is going to be the new mechanic for Dimir as they are supposed to have synergy with the old ones and I don't see how mill has any synergy with Transmute. Also the new mechanics seem to be new. Overload, scavenge, populate, detain, and unleash are new mechanics as milling instead of damage has been done before. Crosstown Courier , Mindcrank , and Undead Alchemist to name a few.
October 16, 2012 4:38 a.m.
There will be a boros Gideon Jura. That was spoiled from an image for the set's preview art.

I don't think kiora's coming in gatecrash... but i know i'm going simic for the prerelease.
Anybody got any idea on what abilities the guilds are gonna have?
I hope simic doesn't wind up with a graft variant... or something too slow to be constructed playable...
October 16, 2012 9:11 a.m.
UmbrotheUmbreon says... #40
@Epochalyptik: It might be the same as infect, except instead of poison counters it's milling. Example would be like "mechanic name: If this creature deals damage, instead defending player puts that many cards in his or her graveyard from the top of their library" or something like that. Note the INSTEAD part of it.
@Cirdan13: To be fair, none of the mechanics in RTR are similar to the original mechanics of the guild, they just work well together. I think, for that reason, this new milling mechanic is viable, as both Transmute and the new one put cards in the graveyard.

I can't wait for the new gideon and i think if they do print kiora then that would be awsome too but i still want dack fayden to be printed the greatest theif in the multiverse deserves to be part of the greatest city to ever exist. then of course there was ral'zarek the izzet guild leader planeswalker from ravnica in the first place.
the set im most exited for has to be Orzhov with Boros as my close second. but I cant wait to see what each guild has been up to and as always I have high hopes for this entire block and have yet to be dissapointed keep up the great work MaRo.

gheridarigaaz says... #42
If the dimir mechanic is definitely mill-by-damage think of how it would slow you down... if you want more effective creatures in the deck you're going to have to counteract the guild mechanic for slots for better creatures. Unless you turn each creature into something like Mindcrank i don't see much point in it in an aggressive format...
October 16, 2012 10:34 a.m.
Rhadamanthus says... #43
Yeah, a mechanic like that actually says "your opponent starts the game with 25+ extra life". In order for a creature with the ability to be at least as good as a regular one, it would have to be 5 power with no drawbacks for 3 mana, or something equally ridiculous.
The Dimir will definitely have a mill theme just like last time, but it won't be associated with their Keyword or Ability Word mechanic (also just like last time).
October 16, 2012 10:41 a.m.
UmbrotheUmbreon says... #44
Just a thought. If it does end up being the keyword mechanic, then it is expected a mass amount of removal and other fun stuff in Gatecrash.
I hope Simic has some kind of ramp mechanic. That'd be badass
October 16, 2012 10:43 a.m.
gheridarigaaz says... #45
I'm guessing the simic will have some kind of ability-sharing ability not far from the graft subtheme. E.g. Helium Squirter or Experiment Kraj . U/G also have the largest number of soulbond creatures, which would support the buildup to it.
October 16, 2012 10:59 a.m.
@UmbrotheUmbreon: I didn't say they were similar, I said they will have good synergy.
Izzet: Replicate/Overload - Both have the option of spending more mana to make the spell better by adding more copies or more targets, respectively.
Selesnya: Convoke - More creatures you have, the better it is. Populate - Make more creatures.
Golgari: Dredge - Puts cards into graveyard. Scavenge - Creatures in graveyard can make other creatures bigger.
Rakdos: Hellbent/Unleash - Both have conditions that make creatures more of a threat. Unleash just has a drawback and must occur when entering the battlefield.
Azorius: Forecast/Detain - OK, so this one has me stumped on how they are similar or work well together.
So 4 out of 5 so far work well together or are somewhat similar. Searching your library for a card and milling aren't really similar and I don't see how they would work in conjunction with each other.
As I was also saying, these are/were new mechanics created just for the guilds. None (to my knowledge) are abilities that had been used before without a keyword. Replacing damage with mill, as I said, has been done before. I'm not saying that there is no way that it won't be the Dimir mechanic. I'm just saying that I don't think it's likely.
October 16, 2012 11:23 a.m.
UmbrotheUmbreon says... #47
@Cirdan13: I know, and I get what you're saying. What I"m saying, and someone else pointed out why they thought it would be the new mechanic, is that cards like card:Jace's Phantasm rely on the amount of cards in the graveyard. Transmute had you discard cards to get new ones. Milling also puts cards in the graveyard. Cards are being sent to the graveyard one way or another, so if new cards are made relying on the graveyard pile up, then in a way they synergize. Not as good as the other mechanics, but still enough to make it somewhat similar.
October 16, 2012 11:27 a.m.
If this is the case, I think a Dimir deck with a splash of white for Rest in Peace to deal with reanimators/scavenge/Worldspine Wurm /Snapcaster Mage /and such, might be in order.
October 16, 2012 11:37 a.m.
UmbrotheUmbreon says... #49
Well that would hurt their style more than help it. It says "exile all cards from all graveyards." If the decks are meant for cards to be in the graveyard, then this effect would hurt more than help.
October 16, 2012 11:44 a.m.
Rhadamanthus says... #50
I think Detain is a re-roll on Forecast. Basically, the designers admitted to themselves that Forecast was kind of dumb and pointless and didn't actually represent the true nature of the Azorius guild. Detain is so much better.
