Grab a box or not grab a box?

So, I want to play a little game with Dominaria booster packs where I build an EDH deck a week with my pulls, courtesy to WOTC confirming that every pack will hold a legendary creature. However, my idea has since evolved, with EDHREC articles on the map.

My biggest problem is how many packs I want to acquire. My intent was open 4 packs a week, then go from there. However, I feel like I'm getting pretty greedy and set my eyes on a booster box (my original number was 28 packs). Regardless, I'll end up with a lot of cards, and finding room for them is a bit of a situation, and The Professor's words (which he reiterates every time he records the Booster Box game, namely the buying the singles you need stuff).

Will buying a box be worth the $80-100 for this game, or should I go lower? If the latter, which would be an ideal number? Thanks in advance.

Shopping around can help. It's always good to help out your local game store, but for boxes and big ticket items it helps to shop around.

Some things that helped me are the Facebook group MTG Sick deals which usually tries to sell for 10% less than TCGlow, Ebay if they are having a coupon X% off every so often one happened yesterday for 15% off, or kickback times for TCGplayer.

Just because there will be a Legendary in each pack doesn't mean there will be a GOOD Legendary in each pack.

I stick to my advice of buying only the singles you need.

Argy: You brought up a good point, and that reasoning is why I'm hesitant to pick up a full box. Now pulling a worthwhile legendary, on the other hand...I'm guessing it's too much of a gamble? I'd get singles, obviously, but I'm not drawn to any legendary or strategy (but that's a different can of worms).

pryoplasm: I was going to see if I could get it online, but it's even if I go ahead with the booster box, which seems unlikely at this point.

My buddies and I are splitting a case. There are five of us so we will be getting a box and 7 extra packs for roughly 100 bucks. We will use the 7 extra packs to have a sealed event amongst ourselves and play for the glory of the SINGLE extra pack from the box :)

The plan is to follow that up with a booster box sealed event where we build a deck (or five) from what we pulled in our boxes and see what we come up with.

There aren't a lot of great reasons to buy boxes, but enjoying limited with friends is still the biggest reason for me. Sometimes I buy a box just to have packs to draft with as the overall cost is cheaper than buying 3 or 4 every time i want to.

Not sure if my rambling helps your decision making at all but just thought it might give you some ideas of things to do other than simpy buying and opening.

I wa responding to the initial post where the OP talked about the game they want to play.

Buying a box to Draft with, or played Sealed is always an entirely different matter, and good value.

Based on what, Dr.Ache?

I mean I could have just said, "Definitely not worth the price of a box."

Yeah, I don't think I'm getting that box after all. I think I'll build an Un-mander deck instead, despite the legalities. The host/augment mechanic(s) is a dream come true for me.
