What are some of the most difficult card names to pronounce? (And let me get the obvious Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar out of the way)

A few I have: War Oracle, Zndrsplt, Eye of Wisdom, and Iymrith, Desert Doom.

Go crazy!

Tangential, but I sincerely believe that Fblthp isn't pronounced Fibble-thip or Fib-lithip or anything with vowels, or even consonants. Instead, if you purse your lips slightly, blow out (but not actually whistle), and flick your tongue between your lips quickly twice, closing your lips immediately after the second flick, you get a sound that can be very easily transcribed as Fblthp. So as far as I'm concerned, Homunculus-language is much more based around mouth noises than throat noises. If that makes sense.

Regarding to each and every english speaking youtube channel I've ever watched, everything that's not perfectly english in origin is veeery hard to announce (looking at you, Jorn, God of Winter  Flip).

The most obvious have already been mentioned. For me as a non-native english speaker, rarely used and complicated words like vociferous always need at least a second or third read before I know how to pronounce those.

Jorn is pronounced Yhorn (:

Think of what sound "yh" makes. Sort of a lightly exasperated "yeh" sound. Slap that on top of the "-orn" part that is pronounced the same way as the word "horn".

Jorn = Yhorn

Also, if I recall, Thor isn't pronounced "THor", but rather "Tor". The H would be silent there.

Lymrith is confusing because it depends where you put the syllables. Is it;

  • Ly-mrith?
  • Lym-rith?
  • Lymr-ith?

I personally pronounce it as "Lymr-ith".

I struggle with Ephara, God of the Polis. I don't know Greek pronunciations, so I'm not sure how to properly say her name.

Like for all I know, it's literally just "Hara" and the "Ep" is silent? No idea.

Lymrith is not spelled Lymrith though, the first letter is a capital i.

I elect Phthisis and its healthy string of consonants!

_Moonie_ that's definitely the one on all our minds, I mentioned it above but honestly I don't blame you for missing it (all the exciting bits about T/O threads are in the comments, after all!)

I don't want to come across as bragging, but I really don't have much trouble pronouncing Asmiranomardicadaistinaculdacar. Just break it down in to bits and practice, and it actually flows fairly well. It's just long. Imagine it like a sentence without spaces.

Asmora no mardica daist in a culd acar.

Related to what seshiro_of_the_orochi said, I remember when Original Innistrad was released and having to correct the people trying to play the GEEst (like geese) of Saint Traft.

This is a comparatively minor tongue twister but I know I have said Teferi, Time Traveler more than I should have.

So, not exactly a hard to pronounce card, but Chulane, Teller of Tales always sounds funny to me. It might be in part because I'm in the southern United States but not from here originally. So, whenever I hear someone play Chulane, it sounds very redneck to me (in the best possible way)

Like, what do you say, Chew-Lane? Throw me a beer Chu-Lean.

I dislike Chulane as a design, but southern drawl Chulane makes me like him a lot better : )

Idk about hard... just the differences I hear people use, and it makes me wonder what was actually decided on during the design of the characters. Or if local dialects have any impact on names and such (if they even go that far in world building)*note. Take for instance Chandra. I've heard it like SHahn-dra and CHan-dra. Or Garruk, its either Gaer-ruck or Gar-rook in most cases.

  • note: They may consider it some. If I recall, in Gideon's origin story when he first planeswalked to Alara (Bant) where they pronounced his name Kytheon as Gideon. Wether it was a misunderstanding or the difference in language I'm not sure entirely.
