Keywords, Mechanics, and More. I've got them all in a list.

General forum

I am currently trying to figure out all the keywords, mechanics, and all that in MTG. So far, I've realized the list is super long and I think I've missed quite a few. Please look below and inform me on what I missed. When able, I will continually update the OP.

Things of Note:

  • I am looking for words (mechanics and common keywords) that appear on the actual cards. I am not looking for player made terms such as "Ramping", "Shock Lands", and the like.
  • If you aren't sure about suggesting a card, just CTRL + F and type it in. If you find it, don't type it. If no results are found, then suggest it. It doesn't hurt. But if it is a stupid suggestion, my fist through the internet and through your monitor/device to your face will hurt.

Keep up the good work, for this is a chore and quite a task. :)

    Vasseer says... #3

Eon Counter (Magosi, the Waterveil), Filibuster Counter (Azor's Elocutors), Return (not sure if that counts), Token, Amplify, Target, +2/+2 Counter (Baron Sengir and some other card), -0/-1 Counter (Wall of Roots), +2/+0 Counter and +0/+2 Counter (Frankenstein's Monster), Cast, Planeswalker, Cleanup (Step), Draw the Game (Divine Intervention and something else), Graveyard Order (if that counts), Islandhome (though technically never keyworded), Bands with Others (different from banding), Lose (Coin Flip) (Mana Crypt)

    August 24, 2016 7:33 p.m.

shit man! good luck, i got nothing else to say. just, good job doing this.

    August 24, 2016 7:50 p.m.

    Eiti3 says... #5

    Thank you much Vasseer.

I'll be adding everything you listed save for, Islandhome and Lose (Coin Flip). I couldn't find anything for Islandhome, nor have I ever heard it before. The Lose (Coin Flip), would be under Flip [Coin]

Islandhome is can't attack unless you control an Island. Do you have high flying listed?

    August 24, 2016 8:12 p.m.

    Eiti3 says... #7

My apologies, please educate me; what is "high flying"?

And as far as I know, Islandhome is a player made term like Shock Lands and Ramping, where the word does not, in fact, ever appear on any actual cards. I'm looking for words that appear on cards. Maybe, I'll go edit that into the OP so nobody gets confused. However, I'm not saying you are.

Landhome (Islandhome) was only actually printed as a keyword on a couple cards in 5th edition (and only that printing) but got errata like unblockable. (Dandan and Sea Serpent) but the effect is still used every now and then.

    August 24, 2016 8:19 p.m.

    Vasseer says... #9

But yes you can look at the 5th edition printings and they do actually have the word islandhome on them.

    August 24, 2016 8:22 p.m.

    freakman13 says... #10

High flying is can only block creatures with flying. Landhome was actually on cards as Vasseer notes.

Also, ante is definitely a mechanic.

    August 24, 2016 8:27 p.m.

    freakman13 says... #12

Bury, Bands with others, double agenda, bottom card (since you used top card), mana abilities. I'm sure I'm still missing some, but... hey.

    Necrotize says... #13

Just a quick one off the top of my head, some older cards have unique versions of +1/+1 counters that either give +1/+0 or +0/+1. Dwarven Armorer does both but there's also things like Coral Reef.

Amplify, which appears only in one set IIRC. Aven Warhawk. Basically just gives it bonus counters when it enters for each creature that shares a type.

    August 24, 2016 8:39 p.m.

    freakman13 says... #14

Nice one with the polyp counters!

    August 24, 2016 8:41 p.m.

    Necrotize says... #15

Ooh can't forget Spore Counters. Thelon of Havenwood can even make an entire edh deck based around them and there are tons of fungi creatures with the mechanic.

    August 24, 2016 8:44 p.m.

    Eiti3 says... #16

I found Islandhome. Never saw it before, but seeing as it is on a card, why the hell not? However, I did search extensively for High Flying and came up with no results. If you are able to produce an image of a card, and/or link, that depicts the words "High Flying" I am more than happy to add it. Until then...

Ante. I never understood what Ante is. All I know is that it automatically removes it from your deck anyway... so... I'll look up rules later on Ante, but if you have free time, feel free to describe that to me as well.

Just added those Necrotize! Thank you much!

    August 24, 2016 8:45 p.m.

    freakman13 says... #17

Ante is only playable in casual, but it is a mechanic that is used to play for keeps. A random card from each players deck is put into the ante zone after determining turn order, but before drawing opening hands, then cards can add or remove cards from the ante zone based on their text. The winner keeps all cards in the ante zone.

Cool beans! Saved myself some time to research. Thank you much freakman13

    August 24, 2016 8:50 p.m.

    freakman13 says... #19

I don't know if you want to use supertypes but World, Tribal, and Legendary all have mechanical baggage (and you already included Snow, which is just a marker). Also face-up / face-down and turning cards such.

    August 24, 2016 8:54 p.m.

    Eiti3 says... #20

Added! (Although, Legend was already there)

    August 24, 2016 8:58 p.m.

    freakman13 says... #21

What's legend though? It became legendary and effectively doesn't exist (sorry about the nitpicking there, but it's just not like banding and bands with others, it's just the old name for something not a similar, but different thing)

    August 24, 2016 9:06 p.m.

    Eiti3 says... #22

    Mirror Gallery

I guess that is an old card, but that is Oracle text which has not been errated since printing. Also Planeswalkers must abide by the Legend Rule, much like Legendary Creatures. Figured I could do it as a one trick pony.

    August 24, 2016 9:10 p.m. Edited.

    freakman13 says... #23

Ah, I just hadn't noticed you doing it that way anywhere else. The reason I would still suggest adding legendary is because, even if the legend rule doesn't apply, a lot of cards care if something is a legendary or nonlegendary permanent.

    August 24, 2016 9:15 p.m.

    Eiti3 says... #24

True enough. Guess it would've been faster adding it rather than "bickering". No harm done.

    August 24, 2016 9:16 p.m.

    Vasseer says... #25

Planeswalker's follow the planeswalker rule not the legend rule (though I'm not certain it's actually called that) it's different in that it refers to subtypes rather than the cards' name (ie. Mirror Gallery doesn't affect pws). High flying is slang not a real game term.

    August 24, 2016 9:18 p.m.

    freakman13 says... #26

Sorry about the bickering. In exchange, I will offer Hideaway up as a peace offering mechanic, alongside Parley.

    August 24, 2016 9:20 p.m.

    freakman13 says... #27

Vasseer is correct about the planeswalker rule not being the legendary rule, and I realized the high flying bit once I looked at a couple old cards that have it's wording. It is so commonly called it that I had incorrectly thought that it was printed at one point in some place other than wizard dev files.

    August 24, 2016 9:23 p.m.

    Vasseer says... #28

Also Booster Pack and Deck (Archdemon of Paliano and Relentless Rats)

    August 24, 2016 9:26 p.m.

    Eiti3 says... #29

All is well. I meant bickering as a friendly joke. All suggestions have been added!

    August 24, 2016 9:32 p.m.

    ChiefBell says... #30

Are you sure you want to list every single different counter individually and not just "counter". Because if you know what a counter is then you kind of understand everything from Azors elecutors to Experiment One

    August 25, 2016 2:06 a.m.

    freakman13 says... #31

Good old filibuster counters, they win games, sometimes, ish.

    August 25, 2016 2:58 a.m.

    Eiti3 says... #33

Well if the individual counters get out of hand, sure I will think about just reducing it all to Counter. Until then, this many isn't that much of a problem.

Added Aura, Curse, and Equipment (derp). Thanks for all the previous help, and all future help is accepted!

    Hi

You should check the document i've published in this forum "custom rulebook". You will find a very similar list.

If you want another one to add to your list, i can tell that "band with other" is missing which differs from banding

    August 25, 2016 11:46 p.m.

    Eiti3 says... #36

Could've sworn I added that before (was suggested before) but alas I must've forgot. All updated! Current count is 255.

    Eiti3 says... #37

mtguser2000. I've read through your rulebook and I must say, it's pretty decent. I noticed you do have somewhat of a similar list and I applaud you on not only making the list, but writing what they do as well. So far, I've only wrote names.

Although, I did find some that I have forgotten! Keywords such as Emblem, Loyalty Counter, Turn, Battalion, Bloodrush, Cohort, Fateful Hour, Formidable, Kinship, Rally, Radiance, Sweep, Tempting Offer, Choose, Dash, Equip, Phasing, Replicate, Recover, Reinforce, Scavenge, Sunburst, Unleash, Abandoned, Ongoing, Scheme, Cast, Detain, Exchange, Plane, Scroll Counter, Planeswalk, Play, Proliferate, Set In Motion, Support, Vote, and changed Islandhome to Landhome. That's a decent 37 cards! Much appreciated!

One thing to note, and I don't know if you've fixed, but I notice that your Replicate explanation has two P's in the title of Replicate.

    mtguser2000 says... #38

Your welcome and much appreciate for your feedback. :)

Yes it is alot of text, had to search on the web, copy past and adjust to my liking. The only definition i had to wrote myself is Banding....the hardest one

Will fix it, word probably didnt show as an error since it is in a floating textbox so i never saw it. Ive seen few errata so far that i'm fixing from time to time..."for" that was suposed to be foe...removing "plane" from the 3rd textbox in the definition of pocket univers...etc..waiting for more feedback to make another version.

    August 28, 2016 11:27 a.m.

    mtguser2000 says... #39

Oh i was showing as an error...though that was the one at the end of the document. Fixed for next version

Man, I remember when this list was just at 200, now it's well beyond 350 when I last counted. I keep adding daily. So I imagine I still need help, if anyone has time to spare.

    Eiti3 says... #41

    With Kaladesh spoilers, I've added:

  • Crew
  • Energy Counter
  • Fabricate
  • Vehicle

And I think that should be all for Kaladesh, but if anything more comes, I won't bother anyone who has 'subbed' to this thread with another comment.

  • Partner

  • If anyone is still subbed to this thread and/or randomly views it, would you like to see descriptions for each keyword I've listed or is the list fine in and of itself?

    October 24, 2016 9:13 p.m.

    mtguser2000 says... #43

Well, what was the purpose of the list? I though it was mostly a challenge.

Truth be told, the older the tread is, the more it gets push back down in the list and the chance that someone new to see it goes with it.

Adding a description to them would takes pages and pages...would that be of use, you could work on that wiki mtg website to keep it up to date...most of them are already there but sometime may need some revision

    mtguser2000 says... #44

Hey, i was thinking about that, if you want to point out what i should fix in my document, that would be great. Keywords section. I am in the process of building a new version of the document, new design, i think it will be much better visualy... and i'm about to start the glossary part 2 meaning the keywords...

    Thanks
