Instant as a Supertype

Some players have asked about the possibility of eliminating the instant type and simply making sorceries with the flash mechanic, but WotC has stated that doing so would be far too difficult, an idea with which I agree. However, another interesting idea occurred to me: what about eliminating the flash mechanic and making "instant" a supertype (akin to "snow" or "legendary") that could be put on cards that previously had flash? I know that it would be too difficult to implement, but it is still an interesting idea. What does everyone else say about that?

That would break many many cards like Mystical Tutor, Merchant Scroll, Mystical Teachings, etc. Seems like too much trouble to try to get everything to run smoothly with that.

Raging_Squiggle, how, exactly, would such a change "break" those cards?

: tutor Snapcaster Mage or any former instant seems broken to me. Invest in Delvers.

Ignoring that, supertypes need to modify a type. What happens to all of the current instants? They just become instant sorcery cards? No need to such large-scale redundancy.

It seems like it would cause more or less all the same problems that changing instants into flash sorceries would, plus it puts extra pressure on the limited space of the type line. Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir, for example, would be a "Legendary Instant Creature - Human Wizard".

Lame_Duck: in that case, why not simply use smaller text? It amazes me that WoTC is not willing to use smaller text to fit more text onto cards.

They have, but the more text is on the card the harder it is to read and more complex it becomes. Ice Cauldron, Call to Arms, Dance of the Dead, etc.
