I don't know about Sword of the Realms being exactly horrible garbage. It's a combo enabler for multiple ways of going infinite. Even not counting the infinite combos with it, it grants a kind of serial immortality to creatures equipped with it. And since they get returned to hand, you can use the sword to abuse etb triggers.

And the god on the flip side lets you move auras and equipment between creatures and grants double strike to creatures with auras or equipment. Moving something like Colossus Hammer between creatures for free and giving double strike to anything equipped with it is pretty nice.

There are many worse mythic rares than just a single side of this card.

He only moves equipment on already equipped creatures though. So he doesn't help with cost reduction and doesn't make colossus hammer better.

What I'm interested in is not only unique Voltron abilities but also the ways to counteract them, and tge other archetypes they build around in this set.

I'm a little disappointed that they're leaning heavily into the stereotypical view of the Norse as war-lusted barbarians. I would have loved to see a more historically accurate depiction that accounts for the fact that the Vikings had a rather complicated society, including a complex legal system, the oldest continuing Democracy, and their society holding legal scholars as every bit as important as the warrior.

It is still early in the spoiler season, so it is possible we will get a more balanced interpretation of Norse society, but the focus on how "heavy metal" this set is does not give me much hope.

That disappointment aside, I am not going to let it taint my enjoyment of the set (unlike with the terrible Vikings TV show--it is unforgivable that something that calls itself the History Channel would so blatantly ignore history). I am looking forward to seeing their interpretation of Norse mythology, and hope we will get a few fun cards.

I rather like the MDF cards and the design of the one god we have had spoiled thus far--the option to keep your second legendary from being a dead card in hand is solid game design.

Mcat1999

Here is all the info the Rules Committee has provided about the MDFCs from the command zone:

  1. Front face of the card needs to be a legendary creature for it to be your commander. Looks like that's going to be true for all the Kaldheim gods, but good to know moving forward.

  2. You can cast either side from the Command Zone; they share a commander tax.

  3. You only do commander damage if the card itself deals damage (i.e. if you cast it as an equipment and equip it to a creature, that creature's damage/a portion of that creature's damage will NOT count as commander damage). If you animate the equipment, with something like Animate Artifact, and deal combat damage with the equipment side, that will count toward Commander damage. That also means that, if in the future, we get MDFCs that are creatures on both sides, they would share commander damage.

Mcat99 nahiri wasn't good enough for my boros aggro equip deck. I play Armored Sky hunter instead and its just better.

Spoiler keeps getting better, I need Old Growth Trolls for pioneer stompy

MagicMarc says... #11

I like how flavorful the Old-Growth Troll card is. It dies, then it's magic spreads into the land, feeding it. And then you can use it's sacrifice ability later to have the land rise up and assemble itself into a new troll. Kind of cool stuff.

VARRAGOTH! HOLY F'ING CHRIST!

MagicMarc says... #13

For Commander that tutor ability is really strong. Conversely, The fact you need to swing the guy is not that great though. Especially in Commander where it's harder to control the combat steps. I would certainly give it a try though. There's always that player in a pod who never mounts any defense and you can always run cards like Varragoth into them.

I can't wait to see what else has the boast mechanic!

Mcat1999: maskwood nexus says creatures, not artifact creatures. so whats "ignorant" about it? 10 mana is a steep cost, especially when it requires all 5 colors.

@mcat, dunno I don't bother with cedh. The format just isn't fun to play. As far as edh tho its a great card because there are never too many tutors. in pioneer constructed tho this card looks wicked fun for monoblack aggro alone, let alone any other decks running black and as wide open as the format is this could fit in so many

MaRo's "card that kills with poison" (from his hint post) has been spoiled.

Poison the Cup

Wonderful trolling on his part, particularly since he knew Vorinclex would complete the Poison Counter misdirection.

Frost Bite would be most excellent if it was any target. Still nice but for a second I thought it was a new Lightning Bolt.

Mcat1999 a cycle doesn't make a card powerful. goldspan dragon most likely won't be useful outside standard unless you're doing something specifically with treasure.

Xianling69

I disagree on the dragon, I think its a fantastic card that should see use outside of standard. Pioneer has so like 3 versions of sped red, I wanna try going a slower big red and this dragon us right on the cusp... The only reason its not in is because I stumbked into some giant synergies but if they don't work out a fat hasty flyer with an added bonus of treasure shenanigans is making the deck.

I even like the idea of it as a 2 of in izzet prowess decks

January 15, 2021 5:51 p.m.

Xianling69 says... #24

magwaaf: the problem with the dragon is that at 5 cmc, there are other dragons that are better, like Glorybringer and Demanding Dragon. those 2 are gonna be much better options than goldspan.

January 16, 2021 12:58 a.m.

magwaaf says... #25

@xianling format depending, in pioneer I've already cut glory bringer in the big red list I'm working on. Unfortunately neither dragon made the cut but in edh its a great card

January 20, 2021 6:21 p.m.

Xianling69 says... #26

magwaaf you can tag users by using double brackets, the same way you link cards. pretty much any format outside of standard though will prefer glorybringer over goldspan though, unless you are doing something specifically with treasure.

Mcat1999: yes it depends on build, thats why i said goldspan would be used in treasure decks. in commander, your ramp should not come from a dragon. in a 60 card format, if you have the 5 mana for the dragon then you have enough mana already. cards above cmc 5 will be too slow anyway unless you're cheating them into play or playing modern tron. i would also much prefer glorybringer over demanding (if i had to choose) in a 60 card format. targeted removal is better than letting your opponent sacrifice their 1/1. keep in mind that demanding dragon isn't guaranteed to deal that 5 damage.

Xianling69, I forgot your numbers. Thx tho, I didn't know how to post cards

When I play minored I love treasure tokenns, the decks use slot of them... Especially in Kiki jiki. I like hoarding them so I can pop 5 at a time if needed.
