Landless Draft?

So let's say you have absolutely no way of getting mana but you still want to have a draft as close as possible to the normal style. What's the best way?

um, each player has any color of mana equal to the number of turns there they have taken in their main phase? they can bank that mana.
or, proxies. use sleeves and regular cards with slips of paper that say "forest" etc.

@ guitarhero - Ok, but then everyone just plays a 5 color deck
You can't shuffle slips of paper into your deck! =)

no just have a regular card in a sleeve and put a slip of paper that says it. that works, ive had to proxy a few before. it doesnt stand out in the deck or anything, works pretty well.

You could just use cards of the color you want and specify which ones are lands. You don't use cards that actually appear in the deck.

Thought about that but didn't have enough of each.... Its too bad nobody knows of alternative rulesets such as landless MTG.

How about each turn each player gets one land, with one change. Each player has a dice with sides equaling the land colors they desire.
In a more complex situation in which they want 80% forest, 20% mountain for example they could use a a TI calculator. Run the random number generator from 1-5 then say that 5 is a mountain and 1-4 is a forest.

Oh and if you want it to be exactly like a real game you could calculate the probability each turn that you would draw a land. After finding the probability you run the random number generator to see if you do draw land or not. If you do then you don't draw normally.

Eaxh card has 'exile this card at any time from your hand: Add 1 of any color to your mana pool. Then roll a 6-sided dice, if you roll a 1-4, draw a card.'

One might try using life as mana. Play all cards at their converted mana cost, off-setting multi-coloered cards with +1 +2 +3 etc costs for each additional color. Oddly enough, people could potentially play their decks backwards. Instead of a ramp up, they might play heavy hitters first and would test their moxy by getting out smaller cards when their life dwindles.
Of course X casting cost would have some limits placed on them otherwise we're back to channeled fireballs.
May want to play with 25 or 30 life. Just a thought.

I'm sure you already have a metric crap-ton of challenge ideas but I think pulling one of these alternate mana rule suggestions into challenge format would be an excellent way to test it.
People tend to have a much better understanding of rules and technique to deck building as a collective. They'll think of more ways to accomodate these rules then me, that's for sure.

You could steal some rules from the now debunk V's System... You draw your hand as normal, and have a deck of say 60 cards, but just put the card into play face down instead. That way you could custom make decks AND not be mana screwed :)
To combat the issue of land being 'Any Colour' you could be forced to declare what type of land it is when it comes into play.
Just a thought on an alternative way of playing. Otherwise sleaving cards up with slips of paper (or just writing on the cards) as lands would be the other alternative
