Max damage done in one turn without attacking?

General forum

Posted on June 21, 2016, 1:55 p.m. by Smileycorp

I played a commander game recently, with my Terur Dragons deck, managing to -8 Sarkhan Unbroken, bringing out about 21 dragons. One of these dragons was Scourge of Valkas, so natuarly I dealt 21 damage to up to 24 targets, For a total of 504 damage.

Again this was without attacking. And I wanted to know how much damage anyone else has dealt in one turn without attacking? I would like to know if anyone can beat my record.

And if we are including combat damage i got to several thousand with a Grixis dragon deck, using Kolaghan, the Storm's Fury.

i had 10 creatures and a Warstorm Surge out.

I play Craterhoof Behemoth.

cast Rite of Replication kicked.

I was playing Narset, Enlightened Master and I flipped Ignite Memories off the top after activating Chandra, the Firebrand's fork ability. I was playing against an Eldrazi-themed EDH deck and I got them for over 200

@Smileycorp that's awesome

Animar, Soul of Elements and Purphoros, God of the Forge on the field, then cast Ancestral Statue repeatedly to deal lethal damage to everyone at the table (it's infinite once animar hits four +1/+1 counters. Super simple and effective)

One of my dream plays is to cast Chandra's Ignition on Malignus in my Xenagos, God of Revels deck lol. Double Malignus during combat then pop ignition during second main. Someday....

An arbitrarily large amount via infinite combo and Cautery Sliver. Does that count?

Aside from that, story time:

I was playing Angus Mackenzie turbo-fog. An opponent was playing selesnya tokens had just exploded into hundreds of huge tokens (via Cathars' Crusade). He attacks everyone, including me. Normally, I'd just use Angus, but an opportunity presented itself. Comeuppance had been sitting in my hand for a while now and it wanted to be used. I couldn't resist. Silently, everyone declared their meager blockers or scooped. Once it was time to cast spells, I calmly lifted a finger and said "I have a response..." The table turned to me expectantly, a shred of hope in their eyes. I lay down Comeuppance, and smile. The Selesnya guy freezes and the other players giggle, thinking they were safe. Only when I read it did their smiles fade to frowns. Every one of his creatures attacking me imploded and the other players exploded. I was very happy. I ended up winning because, well, 1v1 turbo fog is hard to win against in aggro.

The factorial of the US national debt.

Combos win games.

June 21, 2016 3:15 p.m.

After using Vorel of the Hull Clade's ability over about 15 or so turns, I swung in with a 17 trillion+ Protean Hydra. Good times.

ItchiUchiha117 says... #9

I'm with Epoch here. I just made (functionally) infinite mana and then cast Comet Storm.

June 21, 2016 3:53 p.m.

DarkLaw says... #10

Hey, just make infinite mana, cast Banefire, and copy it a couple of times for the rest of the opponents. What's infinity * 4? Actually, infinity. I also read about (though haven't yet pulled off) a guy who used Dualcaster Mage on a kicked Rite of Rep. After a few million copies of Bogaradon Hellkite, he won.

Note: stacking infinite damage triggers technically doesn't do infinite damage. It just takes each opponent down to like -5 because not all triggers resolve.

I was playing a weird Fog deck against a Slivers deck. My opponent had some ridiculous number of creatures and tokens on the battlefield, one of them being Winged Sliver. I cast Hurricane for 10 to clear his board, but my opponent responded with Reflect Damage. I dealt exactly 900 damage to myself.

Assuming infinite combos are out, the most I ever did was with my saproling deck. Opponent had played a Moat and was hoping to topdeck a flyer, I was hoping to topdeck either enchantment removal or burn. I got almost every token maker in my deck before I hit a Mob Justice that I cast for 648 trillion damage.

Pretty good value for 2 mana.

Well my dream combo is to use two Myr Retrievers and Ashnod's Altar for infinite spells and then cast Grapeshot for 67843 damage

July 3, 2016 5:20 p.m.

@_person_ in response i cast Grapeshot for 67844

July 3, 2016 9 p.m.

I cast Force of Will

July 3, 2016 9:50 p.m.
July 3, 2016 9:50 p.m.

I overload Counterflux. The game continues.

Also, Grapeshot and Tendrils of Agony are sorceries, so you both just cast a spell at an illegal time without specifying what gave you flash. Both DQ'ed, now kiss and make up.

July 3, 2016 10:08 p.m.

And also, infinity*4 isn't infinity, its four times larger than infinity.

There's an entire field of mathematics devoted to that sort of stuff, but the two big names in the field went insane after thinking about it too much.

July 3, 2016 10:14 p.m.

@Raging_Squiggle first off, dude, look at the board! we VERY CLEARLY both have Vedalken Orrerys out.

also I play Time Stop

July 3, 2016 10:29 p.m.

I'd let Time Stop resolve. And also, apparently you can't take a joke.

July 3, 2016 10:48 p.m.

_person_ says... #24

Raging_Squiggle:I cast tendrils at the end of the turn, not in response. And I cast Redirect on your Counterflux, targeting the redirect.

July 3, 2016 10:54 p.m.

"At end of turn" is common to say when someone wants to do something after a player is all done. But it is implied to be performed in the end step, not the main phase.

Also, an overloaded Counterflux has all instances of "target" replaced with "each", so when Redirect resolves, it'll have no effect.

July 3, 2016 11:10 p.m.

@Raging_Squiggle my comment was also the joke, dude....

the board doesn't exist.... there's no orrery....

July 3, 2016 11:19 p.m.

Yours was harder to tell that it was a joke.. >.>

And why isn't there an Orrery. Just a global Orrery for everyone.

July 3, 2016 11:20 p.m.

cool, we got that sorted out.

anywho, I cast Ornithopter

July 3, 2016 11:28 p.m.

Respond with Thopter Squadron cause only thing better than one Ornithopter is a lot of them.

July 4, 2016 6:39 a.m.

_person_ says... #31

Counterflux doesn't counter them, they've all ready resolved. And i cast Damnation and then Brain Freeze to mill you for... more than both of you're decks. (Unless you play with 10000000 card decks or something) Then i cast isochron scepter, and imprint time walk.

July 4, 2016 11:31 a.m.

_person_ says... #32

that is Time Walk

July 4, 2016 11:31 a.m.

@Smileycorp combos?

i'm not entirely sure.

anyhow, ulamog trigger, deck gets shuffled back in.

and also, isochron only does instants. Illegal play, sorry.

I was playing a token deck and I had a Vizkopa Guildmage out. I activated it's ability and played Congregate dealing 42 damage.

July 4, 2016 2:27 p.m.

I activate Door to Nothingness targeting myself.

HA! now I can't discard my hand!

July 4, 2016 2:53 p.m.

_person_ says... #40

I let it resolve. I discard my hand, and then cast Haakon, Stromgald Scourge. I win because you died from Door to Nothingness. Oh and you both created and opened the door, so according to the flavor text you are a madman and imbecile

I cast Lava Spike and splice on Kodama's Might, then cast Kodama's Might. I target you with the spike and target my Fencing Ace with the kodama's might, then cast overrun, and attack with him and my 2 Llanowar Elves for a total of 24 trample

July 4, 2016 5:28 p.m.

Why not Overwhelming Stampede. You already have a 5/5. Win moar.

July 4, 2016 5:39 p.m.
