New Deck Category Discussion

Recently, the Tournament category for decks has been restricted to decks that have been played in major tournaments. While this is a perfectly logical move, it leaves a hole in the coverage of the deck categories: with this change, there is no truly appropriate category for decks designed for participation in large events that have not yet been used.

I recently wrote submitted a post to the contact and feedback form that deals with filling this hole, and was told that many other people also felt that a new deck category would be appropriate.

This topic is for discussion of a proposed 'Competitive' deck category, which covers all decks that are intended for major tournament play, but have not yet been played in tournaments or commented on by pros. This, of course, would include major tweaks to existing archetypes as well as polished rogue decks.

Yeah, based on the amount of confusion about the Tournament category, I think something should be done. Just not sure what. Let's hear it people.

If we do have a 'Competitive' category, do we need 'Tournament'?, should we just have a 'Tournament History' box for Competitive decks?

Maybe a 'Professional MTG Winners' section would be appropriate to differentiate between the competitive decks that are built and decklists of the winners of sanctioned events.

Bleagh, that was a mouthful.

@Jimmer We do have that!~ Check out the home page and scroll down to "Pro MTG Decks." t/o features all the winning decks for you to look at and analyze.

I think I'm going to nuke 'Tournament decks' and make it 'Competitive decks' and then allow people to include the Tournament history on the deck page. Any objections?

do persist and undying creatures hit the graveyard? or do their abilities resolve before they ever touch the graveyard?

GoofyFoot says... #8

they do hit the graveyard. persist and undying are triggered abilities, with "When this creature Dies..". the stack then checks if they had the required counter on it, and goes from there.

interestingly enough, you can respond to that trigger. if you send a creature with persist to the graveyard, before it comes back you can Deathrite Shaman or Tormod's Crypt to make it exiled forever, and it won't come back.

thank you. I wouldn't want to see any Tormod's Crypt hahah

GoofyFoot says... #10

yeah, it's pretty hard to respond to that. you could always play Trickbind assuming you're in modern...

it is for edh actually. I am doing Melira, Sylvok Outcast Birthing Pod EDH with Sek'Kuar, Deathkeeper as my general

well, you will usually be pretty safe. I don't know too many people who specifically hate on graveyards in EDH.

you can also board things for "in response to " such as Elixir of Immortality , and things like that....

well my playgroup has at least a Scavenging Ooze Bojuka Bog or the Tormod's Crypt because I also have a Karador, Ghost Chieftain deck hah.

I think i am the reanimator douche in our group

I use True Believer in Karador . I might run Elixir of Immortality in this one now that you mention it.

By the way, this is a rules question and belongs in the MTG Q&A which handles all rules related questions.

And GoofyFoot is correct. Both Persist and Undying are triggered abilities when the creature in question is put into the graveyard from the battlefield. So the creature has to be in the graveyard before it's ability can be put on the stack.

Don't forget Grafdigger's Cage . That shuts the two down also

I actually run Rest in Peace in my Aurelia, the Warleader deck, since there are so many graveyard interactions in Commander. Pretty much shuts down The Mimeoplasm as a commander from someone I know, which can be a huge pain in the ass to deal with :P
