For about the two years i've been playing i've played only standard and casual. And, well, thats getting boring. I love standard but i really want to try a different format and i was thinking EDH. But, i am a sophomore in highschool with no job so im on a pretty low budget. Can i get into this, or any other format, on a budget of say 100< dollars and not completely suck?

Must be nice to actually make money at all. My monthly salary is whatever change I pick up off the ground.
It's not too hard to make an EDH deck that runs pretty well, especially if you limit to yourself to one or two colors. There's nothing wrong with making the deck out of mostly commons and uncommons, especially if the people you play with aren't very competitive.

My first edh deck was whatever I had lying around, and it worked fine.

Yea same. If you can find one at MSRP, buying a C13 precon and modding it with your own cards is a great way to get into the format while getting a couple of good staples (Sol Ring for the most part).

Going off of what Jp3ngu1nb0y said, buying a C13 precon can be a great way to get into the format, and there are also some cards that can be traded in for store credit on ChannelFireball (my personal preference). I bought the Evasive Maneuvers precon and was able to trade in Unexpectedly Absent for $10 store credit, allowing me buy more cards to further modify the deck.

The new commander decks are seeing another run in January, and they are all very good. I like eternal bargain personally.

The cheapest competitive modern deck that I know of is U Tron and that is about 150-200. Now that doesn't mean that you can't build something cheaper but still. An example of U tron is I Fight For the Users!.
Commander can also be cheap. Krenko, Mob Boss makes for a pretty broken commander and Omnath, Locus of Mana is also stupidly strong. (I suggest mono colored commanders because they are easier on the budget.)

Best advice I can give right now is to stay away from Modern and beyond if you are budgeted at all. You can make EDH work on a budget, but research hat you will need to make your deck work before you go invest in anything at all so you can stick to a budget and not lose your game plan.

Cheap EDH is totally possible. There are tons of cheap cards that are EDH playable. For example, Absolute Grace can be hilarious to play in the right EDH game and costs like 30 cents. And there are tons of similar (and clearly better) cheap cards to play in a commander deck. The multi-player nature of commander tends to even things out a little.

I would go with EDH. If you get a precon, that'd be a great starting point. My most expensive EDH decks are somewhere around 150 bucks, and that's with optimized lands and all that (totally unnecessary, and you can just swap lands between decks, shocks are cool like that). If you can still find Mind Seize, you could make a profit on just selling the True-Name Nemesis and keep all the other goodies. Feel free to take a look at all my EDH decks if you want some inspiration. And be sure to ask if you want help on your own deck. I like building EDH decks, and am always happy to help someone new to the format.

ok, turns out I was way off on my price estimates. but that doesn't mean you can't build good, cheap EDH decks. Starting with a precon would likely be the best way, unless you're set on an idea or want to do monocolor.

To Jp3ngu1nb0y and everyone else; Thank you for all the input! I had actually already looked into the decklists for c13 and the esper colored deck was by far my favorite. It seems right up my alley, all my favorite colors paired with life gain and control-y elements all wrapped into one convenient 29.99 package (yes i can get them at retail, they sell them at the barnes and noble here)

Well you can buy an EDH sealed deck as an entry into EDH or just make a RDW for modern. A cheap way to do either

Wizard of the Damned Honestly, i absolutely hate playing RDW lol, so i think i'm just gonna steer clear of modern and try out some EDH

The precons are actually quite good and very playable. I have the Grixis precon and all I did was swap commanders to Nekusar, the Mindrazer , then added in anything I saw that looked fun. They are fine to start with, and its easy to gradually make them better if you only have a little money each week.

EDH is actually not very hard to get into, even without a high budget. Find a general you like, then check my List of Budget EDH Staples and Power Cards.

I'm in the same boat. Highschool sophomore with no job. I would suggest EDH for budget concerns, but if you're a smart trader you can definitely to Modern too. I do both living off of about $30 a month from chores.
