Starting Hands...

General forum

In my many years of playing MTG i have noticed that many/lots of players have varied ideas as to what is a great starting hand, what is acceptable, and what is terrible. I would LOVE to hear what the community thinks is the best kind of Starting hand...how many mana? how many creatures/spells/enchants? I know this varies a great deal for the type of deck being used, but im talking on average, and your general rules for choosing. i.e. i try not to start with less than two mana, i WANT 3 in my hand tho...starting with one in yer hand feels like bad juju to me, anyone disagree? why?

I'm with you on the 3 mana thing. More specifically, I want the ability to get to three by turn 3. If that means one forest and two Llanowar Elves , I'm good. I also want to make sure my hand isn't clogged with high-cost finishers. Other than that, I'm good.

on average

3 land

3 1-3 drops

1 4-6 drop

I need some indication from my opening hand that I'm going in the right direction.

The mana and the early drops you have should also be on color. No 3 green mana and only white wheenies in your hand.

For a deck using Pyromancer Ascension you ideally want 2 lands, but if you have 1 blue or a Scalding Tarn , you can always rely on your search cards to get that second land. :)

Soul Sisters - You would want 2 plains and lots of life gaining weenies + 1 or 2 card:Soul's Attendant for the win!

Basically what I'm getting at is the fact that the opening hand you ideally want is dictated by the deck that you play. It's the finer part of deckbuilding that some people (like myself) can never quite get right all the time.

I just need a hand that can do something. If i have 1 land, ponder, 2 one drops, and some higher end stuff/removal that will actually let me win the game i will be fine.

I prefer a lot of lands in my opening cuz it means the deck gets thinner of them and you wont run out before your win.

2-3 land, 1 drop, removal... Usually hope for this. What I end up keeping is 3 land and whatever I pull hahah.

If I have 4 land and 3 1 drops I'll keep too.

3-4 lands and anything that can be played with those lands is what I prefer, though I've been known to take risks and keep a hand with only 2 lands and no other mana-producing capabilities.

This here is a glitch that I've noticed being an issue for a long time. I believe it occurred after a major update to this site, but I have no conclusive evidence for this. I feel that it either occurred when the comment box got revamped or when the card submission form was updated to accept coding.

Here's an image of the glitch I see.

This is me "control+V"ing (paste) something into a line, and the result is a line break from disappearing. It reappears after I hit Control+Z (undo). Normally this would only occur to the line break directly underneath it, but it for some reason occurs a few lines down, which is what alerted me to the fact that this might be a glitch.
