Im New to magic and i want to an elf deck any advice
I've always had a soft spot for the Onslaught Block Elves. Wellwisher , Timberwatch Elf , Wirewood Herald , Defiant Elf , Wirewood Pride , Taunting Elf are all common meat you just can't beat (stole that from an old Inquest magazine I'm such a nerd). Heedless One and Wirewood Channeler are solid uncommons, and Caller of the Claw , Voice of the Woods are some solid rares.
From Lorwyn, I really like Mercy Killing , Elvish Harbinger , Jagged-Scar Archers Imperious Perfect , and Immaculate Magistrate .
Modern elves are also quite solid. Standard format (Alara and Zendikar blocks, M10, and M11) boast Bloodbraid Elf , Joraga Warcaller , Elvish Visionary , Elvish Archdruid , Llanowar Elves , and others that slip my mind atm.
So, there's a bit of overload, but it's a place to start.

However if you cant find or afford those cards you can use other cards than just elves for your deck such as Coat of Arms , Door of Destinies , or Beastmaster Ascension it just depends on how you want to play your deck

I figured this would be a good topic for such a popular card.
I'm starting to get my foot firmly in the door on modern now and I'm working on brewing up a new deck.
I want to abuse Sphinx's Revelation in the best possible way because
a) I love the cardb) It's still quite potent
Do you still think it's best in an Esper shell or how would you guys go about abusing it?

i would think bant so green can help you ramp in to a big rev plus it has good utility in the sideboard

Bant could be good in it. But if your running the green then why not just use Genesis Wave

UWR control is the only deck it's good in. If you want to play rev you're playing UWR.

It closes out a game by drawing all of the burn spells and restos you need to end a game.

xlaleclx That actually makes a lot of sense. But then you'd be running minimal U/W with heavy burn focus then correct?

I've seen a few U/W Tron lists run Rev to great effect also.
August 1, 2014 6:32 p.m.
You run Restoration Angel Snapcaster Mage and Celestial Colonnade along with burn spells to end games and Mana Leak Cryptic Command and Spell Snare for control

xlaleclx lol, All i'm reading is $$$, $$$, $$$ and $$$, and $$$.
DAMNIT MODERN WHY U DO DIS.

I've been playing 2 in a UW control list that runs 4 Calciform Pools in it. It's been working pretty well. It helps me stabilize late game, or survive early game. Also, the pools are really nice with Cryptic Command .
August 1, 2014 6:38 p.m.
NotSoLuckyLydia I could see how that would work out as well.
Thanks for the tip on that. Calciform Pools is actually pretty neat.

Blue Sun's Zenith is another option.
American Control typical only runs Burn & Super Burn (Lightning Bolt and Lightning Helix )

APPLE01DOJ that's what I'm currently abusing right now, Just because it can stick around and keeps the deck nice and shuffled.
I like Esper control and the Planeswalker Wincons. I feel like Dismember would work along side Sphinx's Revelation with things like Bile Blight and Doom Blade to help with targeted removal.
Obviously i'd like to abuse Supreme Verdict as well.

I dunno, I really think American is stronger than Esper in modern. U have Path to Exile as removal and that's about all black can offer outside of Lilly.

Don't underestimate esper in modern bros and broettes. I've been worked by a couple spicey esper brews
August 1, 2014 8:03 p.m.
VampireArmy Agree'd I think esper can still be something.

The issue with Esper is that it's much harder to turn the corner with that deck. UWR Control gets access to burn spells, and a ton of sideboard cards that are just better than the black that you can play. Bolt is unmatched by almost anything, and UWR gets to sideboard in Counterflux in the mirror, and the versatile Wear / Tear . Ajani Vengeant is another cool tool UWR gets access to.
When you play control, you need the removal to be as cheap and versatile as possible, and that's what UWR has. You should play a couple of Sphinx's Revelation in that deck, by the way. Have you read the card?

Esper can be something. It has the removal, hand disruption, counterspells, etc. However, that being said, American Control is strictly better in modern. But if you wan to, I say don't let anyone stop you from trying esper. It has potential and Sphinx's Revelation definitely has a role.

First of all, There are different formats of magic, the most popular being standard, extended, E.D.H, and Legacy. You'll need to look up the different rules for the different formats, but the most basic difference between them is what cards you can use, and how many of each copy. It would help to know what format you are building towards, so that the tappedout community can help you.
Secondly, How much are you willing to spend on cards? Unfortunately, some of the best cards are being sold for wallet-busting prices. If you're willing to proxy some cards, it'll be less of an issue.
Thirdly, you can always just take ideas from other peoples decks (just make sure you give credit where it's due though!), that's what they are up here for. Happy deck-building!
