Chapin talked about it for a little bit. Does anyone want to elaborate on what Saito did exactly?

Basically he had established himself as someone who would run the clock down for his own advantage.

For example, he was well known for reading and re-reading cards. I've read anecdotes where he read Jace 3 or 4 times during a match.

It sounds like a problem that everyone knew about but they didn't do anything about it for a while. I get the impression that they gave him a long noose so they could have a mound of data to show that he indeed would run the clock down when he needed to. Its not something you could ever bust someone for doing only once, or at least not ban level.

Basically, its about this card: Survival of the Fittest . The card is pretty ridiculous, but I don't know how I feel about it possibly getting banned as of yet.

18 months seems like a pretty long time, but I guess they are making an example out of him. Its a shame really, since he would probably one of the best players in the game even if he didn't run out the clock.

The penalty on Saito is really a punishment for a career long time of cheating because he could get away with it. Saito is one of the greatest deckbuilders and players in the world today and he doesn't have to stoop to cheating but he did it because he could. Since he was in the Hall of Fame Wizards wants to send a message that cheating isn't accepted by anyone in Magic. This message I think is not just for Saito but for all players of the game. It is very similar to the old DCI bans that were attempting to clean up the game. I hope Saito reforms and then PTQs again and becomes the player that deserves the hall of fame not just with skill but with integrity.

The Survival controversy is because one card is powering out the best decks in the format. The three main survival decks (Bant, Ooze, and G/U/x) are the three main pillars of the format (aggro, combo, and control and they all have winning percentages of over 60% against the ENTIRE field. The problem isn't that Survival is a good strategy that is abusable, but that it has become a defining point of the format. Some people will take about Worlds showing that Survival isn't as dominant because it wasn't in the Team Finals or just had two decks in the top 8 teams, but if you look at the teams you see that the Teams not using survival had much stronger Extended and Standard parts and didn't need to focus as much on survival. I think it is ultimately banned because it's seeing success that we haven't seen in a Tournament deck since Affinity (and we all remember how bad affinity was) and because it is dominating a format so badly I think WOTC will ban it and in so doing reopen Legacy to more innovation.

i heard of some other guy, some German champion winner named Ollie who was banned because of repeated warnings not to shuffle his opponent's decks a certain way. Something like that.

and yeah, i wasn't around for the first Mirrodin Block, but i have most definitely heard from my friends who have been playing longer about the Raffinity decks. They'd tell me how they would ban a card integral to that deck and it'll still be playworthy. Then they'd ban another card, then another card, but it was still a good deck. and Necropotence decks, i listened to war stories about those. lol
