Hey I am trying to get an idea of what to pick at the pre-release. Will you pick mirran or phyrexian, and please include why. Thanks!

Phyrexian, do it for Glissa.

Mirran! I want to use koth in case I get him in sealed, and that would mean red mirran cards.

From a logical perspective it is a much idea to base your opinion on commons/uncommons and a very little bit on rares. Not to be a buzzkill (yeah im being a buzzkill) but that koth may not come.

Phyrexian, because Glissa owns Hero of Bladehold any day. I'm going to the Prerelease too!

Very true that the kith may not come, but the artifact removal from scars is focused in red, green, and maybe a little white, so I want a good chance to get cards that focus in artifact removal since so far the 50/50 phyrexian and mirran ratio is red gets all mirran and phyrexian gets the majority of blue, green, and black. Also a little white to be a pain meaning I will probably focus on red no matter what if I am going mirran, which I am.

For me I am going Phyrexian. The only thing I have never liked of the Phyrexian cause was Yawgmoth. I think with what has been shown so far that the Phyrexian's can do some serious damage. I am also hoping to pull a Vatmother or two.

Although, I do want the Mirrans to win (or Bolas), infect and living weapon own metalcraft and battle cry.

The only mechanic I'd like to see appear after scars is proliferate, because none of the other ones seem fun, unless they decide to have more phyrexian instead of bolas storylines.

I like Phydontknowhowtospellit. Infecting someone in sealed is pretty high on my to do list,

Phyrexia... I've been waiting for them to make a true comeback ever since I started playing.

Mirrodin always had very bland creatures, to me.

Unless the Ineffable managed to make himself into the oil infecting Mirrodin, or Urborg is not his true resting place, Phyrexia will not make a return; Phyrexia was Yawgmoth's own brainchild and will not have the same cohesiveness that it did under his power.

And the Myr are bland, but they are steel toy soldiers for whoever bothers to command them. They are more truly Phyrexian than Yawgmoth made it, because they are life in a purely mechanical body, rather than a weak fleshy shell.

Also, Platinum Angel s and Platinum Emperion s spring to mind for cool Mirrans.

Opened both in packs. I got Emperion as a premium in the same pack as my Unpronounceable the Blight Dragon.

glissa is cheaper then blade hold, so mirran

January 25, 2011 3:34 p.m.

I'm torn.

This is my 1st pre-release, and it did have to be a new format, too =P

I'm thinking Mirrran.

Mainly since everyone and their mother is going Phyrexian.

I don't care much for the promo card, though Glissa is more useful to me outside this one day at the game store.

Glissa aside, I hope I can tune my deck to take advantage of the fact most people will play an opposed deck, while everyone else has to tune theirs to deal with like-minded decks.

Thoughts?

I always say to play what you know best. If you don't normally play the type of deck you will likely get from the mirran cards it could give you a slight disadvantage too, which may balance out any advantage gained from choosing what you think is less popular. I favor black. I know black. I'm familiar with mechanics and I do well with it. I can play other styles, I just dont feel as comfortable. Food for thought.

Ultimately, you go with your gut

theemptyquiver:

That makes a lot of sense =)

I prefer Red, Green... with Artifacts and Black in equal measure.

But =(

I'm not a Type II player as much as a Legacy one.

I don't have a lot of experience in the current block.

I look at the spoilers for the cards, but I haven't figured out which are Mirran and which are Phyrexian =P

Whichever has the Red/Green I like, I suppose I should go with that =)

January 27, 2011 1:26 p.m.

In the Scars of Mirrodin set, Red was all Mirran, and Green was primarily Mirran with a splattering of Phyrexian alignment.

So I guess your instinct was correct after all.

Nice.

well scars green is mirran, but now green is practically phyrexian, so hopefully you draw good green cards from SOM, otherwise red/green will be tough.

I play blue, which had me torn, but I think I'm going mirran with the chance of cryptoplasm and knowledge pool. "I play consecrated sphinx" "Well I switch my cryptoplasm to a consecrated sphinx, oh no, now this drawing cycle never ends."

January 27, 2011 10:47 p.m.

[thinks]

So, is choosing Phyrexians or Mirrans just boil down to:

  • the odds you'll get the cards for an aggressive winning deck

or

  • what you want to do regardless of odds of winning?

I ask since the Phyrexian faction looks a little stronger to me.

I'm looking at this with n00b eyes for this Block, so I fully expect I'm wrong =)

I'm going Phyrexian but I'm biased because I've only been playing MTG a couple of months and my first Intro Pack was SOM Deadspread so I have a soft spot for proliferate.

Since then I've developed a liking for U/B control... so I guess my choice is pretty clear.

Having said that, I will be avoiding infect unless I draw Putrefax .

I like the mechanic idea but it's just too typical, everyone's doing it. I want to be able to make a Phyrexian deck that wins by horror beatdown, how it should be!

P.S. fingers crossed Carnifex Demon and Massacre Wurm XD
