Fork And Time Warp: combo

The Kitchen Table forum

I am very new so please stay with me. Call me out on general mistakes I have here

I used a Time Warp, and my friend used a Fork. This means that after this turn, I go, and he goes, because he copied my Time Warp. What happens according to the rules?

Thank you for answering if you can. I am not sure if I have the correct forum.

His Fork goes on the stack and copies Time Warp. His copy of Time Warp will resolve before yours. So after the current turn, he takes a turn, then you take your turn, then normal turn order resumes. So in a two player game, it would be his turn again.

CharonSquared, so it would be like the game continues as always? No changes?

Essentially, yes.

Si the most important thing in any of these situations is to remember how the stack works in order of resolution.

Basically, when it comes to processing a list of commands, there are two ways of doing it. These are:

  • First in, first out (FIFO) which is basically like people standing in a queue. The first person in the queue is the first person to get looked after.

  • First in, last out (FILO) which is like a stack of papers on a desk. Even though there are papers on the bottom of the pile, you can't get to them until you've gotten to the one you've most recently stacked.

Magic the gathering uses FILO. So the resolution order us actually the opposite to the order things are cast. This reverse order is actually what makes things like counterspells and cards like Fork actually viable (you couldn't have them with FIFO).

Now for this question specifically (which does already have an answer), as stated the person who cast Fork will get to have an additional turn first as their copy of Time Warp resolved first.

I hope this gives you a bit more insight into the whole thing.

Its your turn, your friend gets an extra turn, but before he does, your Time Warp resolves, meaning going from your normal turn, it will be your extra turn, then his extra turn, then his normal turn.

enpc's comment was correct. Use it as a basis for how to approach this sort of situation.

While the logic of enpc's comment is correct to point because of FILO on the stack the unfortunate part is that it breaks down after that. Extra turns are taken in reverse order of when they were created since they create the extra turn "after this one". So the Fork player would create an extra turn upon the resolution of the copied spell. The the original Time Warp resolves creating an extra turn after the current one and before the recently created copy's turn. so the turn order would be as MagicalHacker said:

Time Warp player

Time Warp player

Fork player

Fork player

How does someone get an extra turn after another extra turn? That's what enpc is saying. The original Time Warp resolves second, so it creates the "extra turn after this one" second, meaning it goes first.

EDIT: Ninja'd by the one and only, the amazing Gidgetimer!

Yeah, I stand corrected. I thought extra turn order was based off time stamping. But I am wrong there. Similar to the stack, the most recently resolved turn happens first.

Check out this post.
