If i have Witchbane Orb out and I am Hexproof...and my opponent casts browbeat can i elect to take the five damage instead of him drawing three cards?

he thinks because I am Hexproof that I can not elect to take the five so he automatically draws 3...

I say no, I can either let him draw three of I can elect to take five like the card says and thats it....or a thought crossed my mind that i can elect to take five, but since I cant be a target because of hexproof the five damage just fizzels and nothing happens...

what happens? cant find a ruling for this anywhere!

It's quite simple the elected 5 damage does not say target. Hexproof stops being targeted. He can't target you to draw the three cards but the damage doesn't say targeted, it says choose.

Browbeat doesn't target any player for the 5 damage. It's a choice that each player gets to make. If you choose to take 5, you take 5 regardless of having Hexproof or not because the damage portion of the spell doesn't target you for it.

Thanks guys thats pretty much all i thought it was as well and kept telling him that the only time the card is targeting is someone is for the target player to draw three cards...so the five damage part was not a targeting ability it was a choice and there for it changes nothing about how browbeat is played anyways since 9 times out of ten no one will take the 5 damage

So you know: the Rules Q&A area of the site is the best place to get answers to all your questions about game rules, tournament rules, and card interactions.

You mean 9 times out of 10 no one will let him draw right? Because taking 5 damage is much better than allowing your opponent to draw three.
