Burn V Reanimator

Legacy Deck Help forum

Hey guys,

So recently I picked up my old burn deck and have plans to play it for upcoming modern and legacy events. I'm extremely confident in the deck and my ability to play it, but Reanimator is one matchup that I just can't do much about.

Now, fun fact, if you go onto StarCity's Youtube page, SCG Indy of this last year, you can see me get pooped on in round seven by Joe Losset's Reanimating an Iona, Shield of Emeria turn one/two. I would very much so like to avoid this situation as much as possible.

Is Tormod's Crypt my only option here? Do you think that Leyline of the Void is a better option and just mulliganing until I hit it? Wondering what you guys would do in this situation, or if I should just suck it up and take my free wins against the rest of the format.

Thanks

Yes, that's the video... For those interested, I had a chat with PSully afterward wherein we both just kind of sighed and then moved on to my other rounds. This was my third reanimator matchup that day, which is where one of my two losses came from. Also, please excuse the second chin. This was during the winter time when I become dormant and stop moving; it typically goes away around April when I start mowing again XD

The Faerie is neat, I would consider that just as much as the crypt. Maybe more since it can't get hit by the natural hate (because I assume that people assume I have artifact grave-hate). I like it.

Watching the video again, Patrick also brings up Surgical Extraction, which is sweet as well. I think those two cards will find three slots in the side, if not more.

Run 2 leyline in the board and mull till you hit it. He has to slow down to play around it, while u being a burn deck should be able to mull aggressively and keep the pressure on. I play reanimator in legacy and modern, and they are combo decks. They dont really care what you are doing because almost always they will combo off before your kill shot. You have to slow them down

Off topic a bit, what was your opinion of Joe? I played him in KC last summer and was wondering what your opinion of him was.

I had just played Kent Ketter the round before, and as far as players from Nerd Rage go, Kent's far superior to have sitting across from you. The second I sat down, Joe was like "So have you ever even been to an open before?" and I was like "Not a Legacy open", to which he goes on to tell me that he just got smashed the last round by someone at their first open ever. Secretly, I was thinking "good!", but I didn't say anything before we had to start. He seems like a fine person, definitely spikey in nature, and not the best with other people. I wouldn't want to hang out with him, but wouldn't have amy problems asking him about a deck or something. After our match, he tweeted at me "At least it can't get worse", which I had no idea how to take. I ended up winning the rest of my matches that day, so I guess he wasn't wrong? But yeah, he's fine as far as people go.

Gotcha. When I played him it was actually in a modern event where he was playing Tarmo-twin and it was my first modern event ever. He was super salty because he was in the 2-2 bracket playing the first timer types.

The main thing that bugged me was how he had several other Nerd Rage guys watching the whole time. One came around to watch behind me which I asked if he could watch from Joe's side just to prevent any information going around etc. They got fussy about that bc it was "too crowded" on the other side.

Joe also accidentally knocked the top card off his library and flipped it over, so naturally I started to call a judge. His crew tried telling me not to since it didn't give him an advantage, the information was shared and tried telling me I just didn't know the rules since it was my first tournament. I still called the judge and the judge shuffled his deck. He got stuck on 3 lands that game which I won. He ended up winning the match but he was super grumpy about it. Joe and the Other guys watching him started to lecture me about "tournament etiquette" afterwards and I had to just walk away. They were obnoxious and Joe certainly didn't seem any better. He was just rude and didn't even offer to shake hands after I extended my hand.

Yes, that posse of no-name grinders that accompany the players that people know from NR is quite annoying, and they're largely all cocky cocks. I have the unfortunate displeasure of having to play several of them every tournament I go to due to my proximity to their shop...

Yea, that's definitely the vibe I got as well. I've heard a few other people having similar interactions. I just change my cart in TCG to make sure I don't order stuff from them too, if their culture is encouraging little condescending douchers I'll just avoid them in general.

It is a pretty bad matchup, There is a card where your opponent can bring back a card from exile it is a white card so exiling their creature is not always a sure thing
