Calling all Doomsday Players!

Legacy Deck Help forum

Hello TappedOut community! Recently, while surfing the interwebs, I came across the legacy combo deck known as "Doomsday". After doing some research, I found the Doomsday Sac-Tendrils (Budget) variant of this archetype and created a list of my own...

For those of you unfamiliar with the Sac-Tendrils variant, the deck basically utilizes the "Invasion" Sac-Lands (Sulfur Vent) to quickly ramp up into a winning Doomsday "pile". I am playing this variant because I am on a strict budget and cannot afford ABUR Duals, Fetches, or even Shocks. Usually, to aid in the process of assembling a winning "pile", the deck runs Burning Wish with a full "Wishboard", but I am unable to buy them as they cost $10 each. This makes my deck sub-optimal as it decreases consistency significantly without Burning Wish. In its place I am currently using Lim-Dul's Vault, which is actually working pretty okay, but is still sub-optimal for consistency. Due to all these slight inconsistencies, my deck is actually pretty slow for a generally "fast" combo deck, therefore, I would like to increase its consistency slightly.

I know most of the basic piles (and some more in-depth piles) for the deck, so it's not my playstyle or knowledge of the piles that slows down the deck. I'll give an example of one of my basic piles for reference...

Mana required pre-Doomsday:
-Play Doomsday, make the pile...
Top
Meditate
Lotus Petal
Dark Ritual
Dark Ritual
Tendrils of Agony
Bottom
For this pile to work, we are assuming that Doomsday and Gitaxian Probe (to draw Meditate for free) are in your hand, and you cast at least 3 other spells before Doomsday (in order to reach lethal 20 from Tendrils of Agony). Obviously this pile is insanely complicated to assemble in your hand as it requires so many specifics. First, we have to have enough mana to even play Meditate and Doomsday. We have to have Doomsday in our hand, along with Gitaxian Probe as well. Finally, if we are below 5 life, this pile is also a no-go. It's just way too inconsistent for me (I play legacy with a casual group, so I need the deck to be consistent, but not fast, so turn 3-4 wins are perfect).

Basically, I'm just wondering if anyone could assist me in making my deck a little more consistent, not necessarily faster. I am willing to put in a little more money to do this, just not much (Top, LED, and ABUR Duals are out of the question). Thank you in advance, I very much appreciate help!

Tl;dr: I am a Doomsday player using the Sac-Tendrils variant of the archetype looking to improve my inconsistent deck's consistency, not speed, while staying on a tight budget.

Also, here's a link to a primer for the deck just in case...

Since you're playing the budget version I'm not sure how much I can help but here are some suggestions:

Play 4 copies of Doomsday. Just do it.

Play discard instead of counterspells. You should be running 4 copies of Cabal Therapy and some number of duress, probably 3.

I have exactly one deck that runs Doomsday and it's not even close to what you're trying to pull off. It's a W/B combo deck centering around Barren Glory. I'll just link it here just in the absolute off-chance that you could find some sliver of help in it.

I agree that I should run 4 Doomsday. Currently in its place I had Dark Petition for some reason (I really only used it to tutor Doomsday anyway).

As for my discard suite, I suppose I'm going to need to test some things out. The only advantage Cabal Therapy presents me with currently is the fact it snags ALL COPIES of a certain card. In my meta (everyone is a semi-casual legacy player with a budget tier 2-3 deck), no one uses cards on the power level of FoW, so I don't need to worry about getting a specific card. Rather, I would like to see their hand and pick (hence why I played Duress over Cabal), but like I said I'll need to test both to determine which is actually better for me. Inquisition of Kozilek may be a solution for my needs.

Thank you for helping me out, I really appreciate it.

There are easier ways to win on a budget than Tendrils. Have you considered Shelldock Isle combo with Emrakul, the Aeons Torn although you could use any fatty that can win in three turns or less so any of the other eldrazi dudes or maybe Progenitus that or any way to draw out and win with Laboratory Maniac I find both of those methods to be easier to pull off and more consistent than the storm variant. However if you do still want to play storm you should add another enabler like Ad Nauseam or Necrologia to get more cards in hand before storming. I would also cut down on the number of Past in Flames since normally they are a one time use item.
