Eldrazi- too strong for modern, too weak for legacy?

Legacy Deck Help forum

Posted on Feb. 8, 2016, 2:24 p.m. by VampireArmy

My conundrum: i expect eye of ugin to be banned in modern. People are panicking so if this happens, im out an entire deck (so i believe) and will probably drop from modern and move to a more stable format. Legacy. This is more of a plan B than anything.

To do this i want to know if we can port this deck over. Is it that powerful? If not, what changes can i make to make it that powerful.

Hey thanks. I don't use reddit but it seems people are behind it. What are your thoughts personally?

GlistenerAgent says... #4

I don't know if this is better than MUD. Certainly faster and capable of nuttier nut draws.

EndStepTop says... #5

It can kill much quicker than mud but is less disruptive, which I feel is what mud would rather do. Regardless it gives the deck some cute toys to try.

I don't mind playing a more stompy oriented deck as long as it's not going to be completely unviable.

I would also cut thorn for Lodestone Golem who is a beast of a card.

Looks like a cool Plan C for me if the deck does eventually get a banhammer.

February 8, 2016 3:02 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #9

Really? I mean i know the deck is fast mana but i don't see myself ever being able to drop him earlier than T3.

February 8, 2016 3:03 p.m.

2 Ancient Tombs. Easy.

I don't think you can play Lodestone and Eldrazi. One of those will get significantly worse.

February 8, 2016 3:06 p.m. Edited.

I believe if WotC bans anything it should be Temple since compared to Eye it isn't Legendary and running 4 would be difficult to support.

Also, Eye is a major staple in another deck archetype that really isn't hurting anyone. It didn't even see much love at PTOGW. Banning Eye would cause another huge uproar, and Wizards can't have another "Twin Ban Reaction" on their hands.

EndStepTop says... #12

I mean it may very well be the case that you don't need golem. but having a thorn of amnethyst that helps close games seems just fine. I thought he had city of traitors which would enable tons of t2 golems. I also think this is a much better version of the usual stompy lists. Not needing to splash to get good beatsticks is a God send and TKS in particular being able to disrupt miracles/combo seems like a nice addition to the game plan.

Gagent: good point but i think I'll keep thorn for now. Seems better in my deck for now

anooshapalooza: I'm not saying either will be banned for sure but i want to look at options just in case.

February 8, 2016 3:18 p.m.

I don't think the banning is likely or imminent. If I had to pick, the real issue is Mimic, but even then it's too early to jump to a ban.

Like i said, it's a plan B. It's good to cover your bases just in case but hey man, i don't mean to be rude but I'd like to focus this thread on improving my deck. There's a discussion being had if you want your thoughts heard on the subject.

I really want to make the legacy list. Might be my next project after I finish 12 post

So I looked at that reddit thing and started working on my own list. I'm not much of a legacy expert by any means but I feel like Endbringer is actually really filthy in the deck. Given it can keep drawing you cards if nothing else so your hand is always stalked. I don't think simian is nearly as needed in the legacy version given the amount if lands that can tap for 2 mana in the proposed deck idea's list.

February 8, 2016 6:36 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #18

Hmmm im considering dropping the simians for Spatial Contortion or Warping Wail. Any thoughts?

dan8080 says... #19

Warping wail seems like a legit option.

February 8, 2016 11:38 p.m.

Warping Wail is insane. Very good against many different decks.

@ VampireArmy - You should consider using Yavimaya Coast so you have access to a few important spells to stop combo decks as well as Crop Rotation to fetch Eye of Ugin more consistently.

First, the meta will adjust to Eldrazi. We just got the banhammer dropped on Twin and Bloom, so there is a temporary vacuum of adjustment which has been filled by Eldrazi. No biggie.

People seem eager to drop the banhammer on Eldrazi Temple. That might defang Eldrazi the way Twin and Bloom have been defanged. On the other hand, there is certainly tech against it. People will find it and try to use it. I tend to doubt that Eldrazi will continue to dominate, and it is great to have a new Modern archetype, especially since two archetypes have been recently defanged.

Unfortunately, what could happen is what happened with Standard and Extended when Mirrodin gave us Affinity. We had Artifact Winter, a time when you played either Affinity or Anti-Affinity. As you can see, Affinity is still in the running as a tier-1 deck.

We might find ourselves in Eldrazi Winter, where people must play either Eldrazi or Anti-Eldrazi, with the rider that Affinity is still playable...L.O.L. That would be bad. No-one wants that situation. Everyone wants diversity in the format.

The first line to take is to find Anti-Eldrazi tech which fits into existing archetypes. Can the deck be hated out? If it can, all is well. Most decks can be hated out.

The second line is to develop other archetypes which did not contend well in the previous field but can go toe-to-toe with Eldrazi and Affinity. Such decks may or may not exist or be possible with the current card pool.

If these things fail, then people will truly start calling for the banhammer. That still may not be necessary. The format can also be re-diversified by unbanning cards. We could have Splinter Twin, Summer Bloom, Green Sun's Zenith, Deathrite Shaman, Stoneforge Mystic and Birthing Pod back, for example. Wizards could try a whole Season of Modern Nonsense, just unban 29 of the 34 cards on the banned list, and see what happens (excepting the Mirrodin Artifact lands because with them and Sword of the Meek, it will be Artifact Winter all over again).

Or, Wizards could go the easy route and ban Eldrazi Temple (NOT Eye of Ugin).

alanwescoat - everything you've said, I've already replied to and as I've already mentioned before, there's already a thread for that. Please express your thoughts there. Not my deck help.

kengiczar i would consider it but i can't afford many lands that only tap for 1 mana. It's still a ramp deck at it's heart. As for combo, I'm relying mostly on Thought-Knot Seer and Warping Wail main deck along with Chalice of the Void and Thorn of Amethyst it doesn't seem that bad to me

sylvannos says... #24

I don't know if I like Mox Diamond in this list. You're already pretty prone to getting strained on mana because of Rishadan Port and Wasteland. There's also the risk of getting locked out from under your own Thorn of Amethysts. Maindeck Relic of Progenitus, Phyrexian Revokers, Mind Stone, or Umezawa's Jitte seems stronger.

February 9, 2016 8:16 a.m.

VampireArmy says... #25

sylvannos i noticed that problem while goldfishing yesterday. I'm thinking MindStone , Relic of Progenitus , or Expedition Map do you think those would be too slow?

February 9, 2016 9:41 a.m.

sylvannos says... #26

I like Mind Stone because you can cast it on turn one off of Ancient Tomb et al. Relic of Progenitus and Expedition Map are both good, the only problem is when you have a Chalice of the Void set to one.

tyler29 says... #27

they should just ban Eldrazi Mimic and that will hurt the deck enough to make it balanced and still playable... cause if they ban Eldrazi Temple... then eldrazi decks are just "meh" at that point

February 15, 2016 10:54 a.m.

alanwescoat says... #28

tyler29, I have been thinking the same thing over the past few days. Banning Eldrazi Temple seems to not be enough, and banning Eye of Ugin seems to be too much.

I have made Can Eldrazi make it to Legacy? list. I play Dismember over Warping Wail, because it can be casted by tapping one rand even under Thorn of Amethyst, it dodges chalice at 2 and actually relevant reasen: it hits bigger creatures than Warping Wail. I found endbringer too slow, because this is stompy, not stax.

my biggest problem with the eldrazi deck in legacy is that in all the list ive seen including the three copies on camera at the scg open in Philly. the deck is in this weird space where it doesnt have enough good support cards to play a classic mud strategy, but it also doesnt have the removal or really Hard to kill threats. so my assessment of the deck is that playing the middle space almost works if the deck could find a threat that was difficult to remove like True-Name Nemesis, or if it had a good removal spell as in Swords to Plowshares or Abrupt Decay then the deck would be very good indeed.NOTE: this is just an observation i do play a good amount of legacy but i have not playtested against the deck so anyone who has might have more information than i would.

March 5, 2016 4:22 p.m.

I feel like the deck hasn't fully come together yet and is still suffering an identity crisis in Legacy. I don't mind it Legacy, where as it's clearly busted in Modern. In Legacy you have cards like Wasteland, Daze and Force of Will keeping a lot of players honest.

So this thread is actually quite old. I didn't realize at the time that eternal masters was going to cause such an extreme price jump for all the relevant reserve list stuff in this deck. Basically i can't afford it now. I'm glad i was right about the power level though.

Now to go trade off some staples.....again.

March 8, 2016 11:56 p.m.

Lmao. I definitely hopped in on the tail end. Looks like it was rezzed from the dead a couple days ago.
