Manamorphose In Legacy Burn

Legacy Deck Help forum

What are anyone's thoughts on Manamorphose in legacy burn competitively and casually. I picked up 3 today from my local shop to experiment with. Seems like it could work but I don't play competitively. What do you think?

Why? It's cute but largely irrelevant.

I dont see what it does. Its not a burn spell.

It thins the deck out and it is a free draw card. Thinning the deck out in burn is a major candidate. This is why competitive decks run Wooded Foothills, Bloodstained Mire, Scalding Tarn, Arid Mesa. This is actually something that needs to be done and Manamorphose is interesting because it gives your mana back making it free and allows a draw.

It's a major mechanic* not candidate lol.

They typically run fetches to fuel grim lavamancer. The deck thinning from 1 card is so statistically insignificant it's all but irrelevant. Burn wants 1 thing and that's mana efficient damage, manamorphose just dilutes your deck for no strategical gain.

Generally, the fetch-lands are not solely for Grim Lavamancer. It is for thinning the deck out. Grim is more of an added plus you can use for this.

Fetches are a plus since they don't cost mana and it thins out the deck. Man amorphous can be countered which causes loss of tempo and a wasted turn

Fetches and cantrips are in entirely different categories.

You need the fetches because they allow you to avoid mana screw without causing mana flood - they thin out LANDS, something you don't want too much of anyhow.

With Manamorphose, you're thinning out SPELLS. Sure, you could use manamorphose to thin the deck, but why wouldn't you just want to have another actual burn spell in there instead?

What if the spell you draw would not win the game and you lose because of drawing it at the wrong time. Instead, you can tightly pack the deck with only spells that are the most efficient possible. Manamorphose can allow this by letting you draw for free and retrieving a card that is key at the time you need it. Again, this is not a serious consideration but it is interesting and could be debated. This is why I brought it up. I did however buy 3 the other day just to mess around with and try this out.

Manamorphose is great for monored aggro. However, I would be reluctant to use it for Burn. I use a 4x playset in my MOD GOBS with great success.

The issue comes with the fact that Manamorphose is a sorcery instead of an instant. Monored aggro has little issue with this, but Burn wants to play a lot of its spells on the opponent's turn. Hence, you weaken your ability to mess with your opponent's board state by casting Manamorphose when you have to use the mana on your turn instead of your opponent's turn.

That being said, for my Goblins deck, I run 4x Manamorphose, 4x Gitaxian Probe, and 9x fetchlands maindeck. In essence, I am actually running a 43-card deck. The only reason I am not running Street Wraith as well is because of Burn. If not for Burn, I would be running a playset of Street Wraith as well to make my deck a virtual 39-card beatdown.

Because I am running eight "free" cantrips, I can run the deck with only sixteen lands in addition to 4x Simian Spirit Guide which run triple duty for mana acceleration, partial compensation for the lack of lands, or as one more body to use for beating down my opponent if my mana is already set. I have had a lot of success with the deck.

Modern has three cards for this kind of deck thinning. Gitaxian Probe is the best. I think Manamorphose is second best but only if you are playing red or green. Street Wraith is a medium-sized body you are unlikely ever to land in Modern, so basically, you are just cycling it for two life. Its only advantage is that cycling cannot be countered.

Oh, wait. Manamorphose is an instant. Never mind! Heh. R.T.C.

Well, depends on your list. If you have run out lands and burn to add and you have 4 free spots, they might as well be manamorphose. But you should not take a out a burn spell to make room for it.

16 lands - 2 badlands, 3 mountains, 1 swamp and 10 fetches.

4 Lightning Bolt
4 Chain Lightning
4 Rift Bolt
4 Lava Spike
4 Price of Progress
4 Flame Rift
4 Bump in the Night (replace with 4 Grim Lavamancer or 4 Monastery Swiftspear if mono-red)
4 Flame Rift
4 Tyrant's Choice (replace with Sulfuric Vortex if mono-red)
4 Fireblast

You can have Manamorphose in those 4 free slots. Makes you less dead to chalice for 1, I guess?

I feel like this is the equivalent of this:
