new to legacy

Legacy Deck Help forum

Posted on Aug. 13, 2015, 8:39 p.m. by The_Tickler118

As a semi-new magic player i want to explore more into the realm of Magic and start playing some different styles. I am completely new to this format and because you can use nearly every set created, it is a bit overwhelming. If you could help me on where to start that would be great. Also im not too terribly concerned about budget except for cards like tarmogoyf and snapcaster mage... or any card that is above 50 dollars

MtGGoldfish has records of top-performing Legacy decks.

I highly suggest you visit r/mtglegacy and check out the sidebar for their tips on starting to play the format.

If your budget is anything less than $50, you are better off playing modern. Legacy, your land base alone is going to cost you about $800, usually. There's a few budget options, but if you aren't comfortable dropping $2000 - $3000 on a deck, then this is not the format for you.

On the plus side, Modern can be super fun! It's currently a thriving format, and sounds like just what you're looking for!

Legacy burn is relatively cheap compared to other decks. The only expensive cards are fetchlands, Goblin Guide, and Chain Lightning. It is also very easy to pick up and play because it has a very linear strategy.

You sound completely new, I think the correct place to start would be starcitygames 'past broadcasts' twitch webpage. Where you can watch last weekends Legacy tournament in Washington DC.

Look for a deck you think looks fun to play, then google search for a primer about said deck, and then start acquiring the cards nessessary if it falls into your budget.

As a side note; any deck that plays islands and is two colors has a mana base of well over $800 realistically. Over $1100 if it's three colors.

I want to throw Pauper into the mix here. For someone who is just starting off and may or may not have tons of disposable income, Pauper is a great format as the decks are very cheap. The most expensive decks will net you around $30-$40 for the 75. And those are top tier decks. Pauper is a cool format and definitely one worth looking at. You can get your friends into it as well as it is a very cheap format and everything can be bought using an allowance or a small part of your paycheck. Why pay $40 on a single Arid Mesa when you can use that money to pay for a whole deck plus sideboard?

Burn baby burn. Start there, play and learn the other decks and go from there. If you find it's not your thing then you can always sell your cards.

I started playing Burn as my first Legacy deck, it's also 70-80% the same cards you need to play Burn in Modern so it's a great place to start out as you gan access to both formats at once. The same thing can be said about Merfolk, that deck is a little more expencive then Burn, but it's also a great deck for playing in both modern and Legacy.
