Sulfur Elemental in Sideboard?

Legacy Deck Help forum

So, I'm fairly new to legacy myself, I actually don't even have a deck at the moment, but I was planning on picking up a miracles deck because I love control. I was looking at deck lists for it and I saw that a few were playing Sulfur Elemental in the sideboard. If anyone could let me know why this card is in the sideboard in a legacy deck, that would be great help, thanks.

Death and Taxes can be brutal for Miracles if it curves right, though the matchup is not favorable. This kills more than 1/2 of the creatures in the deck.

Also, how does Monastery Mentor fit into the miracles sideboard as well. I saw this in the sideboard also and I don't entirely understand why it's there because I thought miracles was more of a control deck and less of a token/tempo deck. Thanks again for any help on this.

It is resilience vs 1 for 1 decks like Jund or Deathblade variants. The about mentor is that it can kill in just two turns if given the right conditions and is not easily answered by Abrupt Decay or bolt and such.

Ah, thanks Boza, that makes sense, I didn't think of the Death and Taxes matchup, are there any other decks that Sulfur Elemental may be effective against as well, or is it mainly just Death and Taxes?

That also makes sense for the 1 for 1 decks, sorry about not knowing these things even though they are probably common knowledge, still very new to this format, thank you very much for the help Boza.

Not really, but you do not it to be effective vs multiple matchups. It is good to have a card that is good vs multiple matchups in the SB, but it is second best, if not even better, to have 1 card that just completely shuts down an opposing deck (i.e. Stony Silence vs affinity in modern).

True, and from what I hear, Death and Taxes can be a hard matchup for miracles so it would make sense to have a specific good answer to the deck.
