Until I get my duals...

Legacy Deck Help forum

So I'm building Nic Fit, and no doubt the last things I'll acquire will be the Bayous. My question to more experienced legacy players: until I get them, should I run shocks or just basics? The reason I'm uncertain is because nic fit uses a lot of basics anyway, and Veteran Explorer etc allow lots of fixing with them. Obviously bayous are a step up, but would shocks even be worth the extra life loss? I have all my Verdant Catacombs so I think I could survive without the extra flex from Overgrown Tomb until I get my bayous.

Tl;dr, can Nic Fit survive w/o until I get my duals? Or should I sub shocks?

run 1-2 shocks in case you need them..

I don't know the deck list of Nic Fit off the top of my head, and don't have the time to look it up properly right now.

That being said, you probably won't need duals unless you have cards like Hymn to Tourach that have double-mana casting costs at low CMC.

Just know that by shaving duals from your deck you're going to run into more awkward draws mana-wise than you would otherwise. If that's okay with you then go for it.

Hm, well my list does run a few hymns, so that's not irrelevant. In a perfect world I would land Explorer/Therapy every game which would allow me to have Forest/Swamp/Swamp, but I'm afraid that's not always the case. I think I might just go with 1 or 2 in case I really need the double.

I play nic fit in legacy and am very active on The Source's thread of the deck. First off, I suggest that you check that out. Secondly, do you have a deck list?

I was fine running an overgrown tomb until I traded into a bayou. Even now I only have one of each dual and my mana works perfectly. I am playing abzan however, instead of the traditional GB shell, though abzan or jund have been the go-to choices for the deck in recent months. With how much you are ramping with VetEx, you don't have as much a reliance on duals because you can just fix with basics. Until I see a deck list though, there isn't much help I can offer.

DevoidMage, we sure have similar taste in decks haha. My list is loosely Simple Nic Fit, but it's not quite like that in my head lol. Mine is just GB for now, maybe a third color someday.

Shocks are the next best thing to ABUR duals. In most matchups the lifeloss is negligible. I'd substitute shocks until you obtain the few duals you'll need for Nic Fit.

Your general dependance on dual lands with Nic Fit are in matchups where it doesn't really matter for the most part (i.e. if storm is going to kill you, two life doesn't really matter). Ironically, despite having access to abur duals in legacy there are many instance where you aggressively fetch basics to avoid being Wastelanded into oblivion. Are abur duals preferred? Absolutely. Are they 100% necessary? No. Are there games where you will lose because you shocked yourself? Yes. Would I recommend playing Junk Nic Fit without aburs? Not really.

Play basics, learn to "play around wasteland"

Not at all an expert on NicFit, but i'd say stick to 1-2 shocks and that's it.

And I completely disagree with the whole "If storm was going to kill you, 1-2 life doesn't matter anyway" mentality, especially post sideboard. The amount of games i've won against storm because they couldn't get that last storm trigger are pretty numerous, and are all memorable. 1-2 life can be what makes/breaks your match vs. storm, and I would straight up never shock myself if I were playing against storm and had shocklands in my deck, unless you were comboing off yourself that turn. .
